Moisture Content Weather Red Cedar slats

splitting csn be a problem but, in my experience , only in very narrow sections. My 25 year old greenhouse made by a then top bespoke maker has wedged mortice and tenons which are also nailed with black non-rusting oval nails throughout. These or stainless versions would be good as plain steel...

Moisture Content Weather Red Cedar slats

I'm sure it is shipped green. I have recenrly been making soem greenhouse frames with it and, as bought it was very wet. For external use I see no point in trying to dry it; it will soon find it's own level. It is also in my opinion pointless to treat it with Osmo ( or anything else) It has...

    Resin/pitch blade cleaner?

I can recommendd the CMT cleaner - I have found it to be very effective and it doesn't evaporate away quickly like solvents such as meths. Jim

    Could these doors contain asbestos?

Large numbers of people are still dying of mesothelioma, I believe it is thought that we still have not reached the peak of deaths from it because of its ubiquity in buildings over many decades. Quite a few teachers have died from it after working in schools - many post-war schools are stuffed...

Axminster "precision" combination set square - total joke

I am only surprised that you are surprised. They are cheap and if you are buying off ebay, it may have been dropped on a concrete floor or worse. When it comes to measuring and marking Moore and Wright and Starrett are the only names to be trusted. I long ago taken to heart th old adage - if...

Hand planing multiple components to same width.

No idea how thick or wide your components need to be, but I have had to make quite a few lengths of holly stringing in two different widths, but all 3mm thick. Stock is initially thicknessed to 3mm using a slave board on the planer/thicknesser, then bandsawn to widthe a little wider than the...

    Wadkin BOA planer head upgrade

No doubt, but I still can't understand why such a great comparatively small machine is not more popular in its intended market sector. Jim

    Wadkin BOA planer head upgrade

I know it's not Wadkin but if I were in Sweden I would have (as I do now) the Moretens H410 p/t which is a great machine. Only two cutters but the higher block speed gives equally good results and the absence of conversion between planing and thicknessing will save you many times more than...

Is Pineboard a good alternative to Ply for shop cabinets?

Never used pineboard but I'm surprised to hear that it warps and cups. I would have expected that the relatively narrow and short pieces that it comprises would mean that the great variation in orientation would make it very stablewith the different pieces balancing each other out. This is...

    Viceroy Sharpedge Oil issue

Can't help with your query but I have used one of these machines, and very good they are too. One problem you may need to address is that the stone needs dressing flat periodically and it is not a diy job. I believe there are (or were) firms who offer this service. You might get away with a...

    Second hand planes....

Agree with most advice given, but a few points 1. Quality took a big dive from the 60's on. 2. Stick to Stanley and Record, most other brands were made to lower stamdards e.g Acorn. 3.It is difficult to flatten a sole that is convex. Jim

    No more 2 3/8" blades

I use these https://www.axminster.co.uk/japanese-laminated-plane-blades-ax22303 laminated Japanese blades. In my opinion, infinitely superior to any of the Stanley or Record blades and worth every penny. Unlike many aftermarket blades they are also not much thicker than the original blades so...

Any idea what this timber is?

Pinus rigida, not extinct by any stretch but, I guess not grown commercially. By pine standards it is not huge, classed as a small to medium sized tree, so commercially there are better candidates for replanting. It's native to N. America, so I guess it was felled and where replanting took...

Class L or Class M dust extractor for home shed/workshop

I agree, the filtration is exactly the same on both, but L is cheaper. M is good where there are mutiple users so it usually ends up being no ones job to check the bag. If you are the sole user it's your job and you will do it so no need for an alarm. Jim
