    Quadrant bookcases

That looks great, it has beautiful proportions. Substantial but not heavy. Is the back panel painted and what's the round detail at the end of the plinth ?

    Repair split glue joint

It is a tricky shape to clamp. I think I would make a cramping jig using two boards cut to sit around the perimeter of the seat and apply pressure with sash cramps.

    Repair split glue joint

It's difficult to tell from one photo but would it be practical to split the seat into two pieces, clean the join and glue and clamp back together ?

The chest for the architect is finished. The oak frame was wire brushed to give it some character then fumed in a homemade tent with ammonia. The madrona burr drawer fronts were french polished, knocked back then waxed, The architect liked square socket brass castors so they were the finishing...

    Self employment

This is an interesting thread with a good range of advice for somebody in Designer 1's position. Designer 1, I'd be interested to know a bit more about you and your circumstances. Have you been to college to learn a trade or served part or all of an apprenticeship ? What experience do you have...

    How do you identify wood?

My local timber merchant has a 'Periodic Table of Wood' poster in a frame on the wall. Every time I see it I think how nice it would be to have a poster like that on my workshop wall,,,, and then by the time I've paid the bill, loaded the timber, said goodbye to everyone and journeyed back to...

    Filling a hairline crack

Edit to say, I harvest the fine wood dust by taping a latex glove over the extractor port of my orbital sander, slit the end of one finger so the glove doesn't blow off and sand for a few minutes whilst the other 3 fingers and the thumb collect the valuable product. I'm not proud of this...

    Dovetail cutting saws

If you haven't used Japanese saws for dovetailing before, I would recommend them. The concept of cutting on the pull which keeps the (thin) blade in tension is a revelation. Workshop Heaven sell a 240mm Dozuki saw which would be a good introduction...

    Filling a hairline crack

Make a fine wood powder, (the dust produced by a power sander with a fine grit paper) from a piece of timber the same species and colour of the item you need to repair and mix to a paste with the intended finish and use that for a filler. This way, the refractive index of both filler and...

    Self employment

I found that having a website was a game changer. It gives prospective clients the opportunity to view your work and ultimately the confidence to pay a deposit. In its simplest form a website acts as online portfolio which is easy for anyone to access. You can make your own website for not much...

The only pieces for sale were the zebra cabinets. They were £ 90,000.00

    Need a new block plane

Agreed, the L&N 102 is a joy to use and will sit happily in an apron pocket. The Lie-Nielsen 60 1/2 low angle blockplane with an adjustable throat is a little heavier and more of a workhorse. Both are really lovely tools with excellent blades. There's a chap in the Ukraine who will engrave...

    Makepeace Exhibition.

My social media page has reminded me that 11 years ago I visited the John Makepeace exhibition that was making its way round the country at the time. I thought you'd like to see some photos I took that day.

    Startrite 352 bandsaw

I've found the stock blade guides on the 352 are a bit basic and prone to wear. About 5 years ago I gave my machine a good tune up and fitted ALT Saws roller guides top and bottom and things are greatly improved. http://www.altsawsandspares.co.uk/rollerguides.html

Progress on the chest of drawers. This piece is for an architect friend of mine who has done some work for me. I didn't expect him to have so much input but once an architect gets his pencil out, there's no stopping him.:) Some drawer fronts have a bit of polish on them, some are...

    Britain's Best Woodworker

I caught the quick shot of the mustachioed technician with the Rapunzel like barnet. Sooner or later that's going to get twisted round something that's spinning quite quickly.

    That Amsterdam door paint

I've often wondered about the door at number 10. I can imagine that once upon a time it would have been hand painted and the men who did it would have been incredibly proud to be able to say they had painted one of the most famous doors in the world. I can't help feeling that these days the...

    Britain's Best Woodworker

And Alex Webster, the furniture restorer on the telly, wears a magnificent leather apron with neck shackles. Chiropractors be rubbing their hands together. :D
