    Compressor Hose Advice

Rutland offer a flexible hose with no memory. I'm expecting one to arrive early this week so I'll let you know how it is. https://www.rutlands.com/sp+nailing-compressors-air-hose-premium-flexi-hose-with-quick-connectors-rutlands®+r7103

MDF Workbench top - best finish?

I use 25mm moisture resistant MDF for assembly bench tops, finished with thinned down polyurethane or Osmo or anything like that I have hanging around, just so the glue pops off. It's important not to overthink these things... although thinking about it, I wouldn't use chipboard. For anything.

How do you do it? Your business

I don't enjoy the paperwork but it's a necessary evil. As mentioned above, I would never start work on a job without first agreeing a price. This was a hard and expensive lesson learned many years ago. I work on my own and try and make the quoting process as painless as possible. I use a Mac...

In which year did you start woodworking

Thanks Tibi, this is a great subject and one that got me thinking good thoughts on the drive in to work this morning. My first piece of furniture was a coffee table in oak with turned legs that I made in the woodwork class at school. Thinking back, the learning curve was pretty steep, first a...

Anyone want to do a weight loss challenge?

Shedding weight is very straight forward. Eat less and move more. Unfortunately most of us are not fit enough to burn sufficient calories to lose any appreciable amount of fat... as anyone with an exercise bike will testify. To offset just one Mars Bar will take a couple of hours of sustained...

    A chest of drawers.

Thankyou for the comments and thankyou Sean for the offer of the flakes but I'm a Seal Coat convert for now. Cabinetman, I glued the frame up as square stock then rounded everything with a router fitted with a rounding over bit. Then riffling into the corners and lots and lots of sanding.

    A chest of drawers.

Here's why I needed to make the frame as rigid as possible... 25 kilos of soft close self close drawer runners. I prefer to use Grass Dynapro runners, they are bulky but have a lovely action. The ten drawers were dovetailed in oak and everything started to come together.

    Outdoor bench slats recommendation

I think the trick is to put wooden garden furniture away undercover in October and not to bring it out until May. Only then will it have half a chance of lasting more than 10 years. Iroko or teak will fare better than oak but if you do use oak, perhaps take a leaf out of Gaze Burville's book...

    That Amsterdam door paint

It appears Number 11 Downing Street has a similar high quality finish.

    A chest of drawers.

Hello Ian, the Zinsser Seal Coat is quite dark, similar to a button polish but it worked well with the Madrona. With the 20 burr panels french polished to within an inch of their lives it became clear that this was not the finish I was after. Too glossy, too shiny... too much Rolls Royce Silver...

    Working with English Yew

Hello RV, I hope you enjoy your adventure with Yew, it's a rather magical timber. Old Yew, which graspest at the stones that name the under-lying dead, Thy fibres net the dreamless head, Thy roots are wrapt about the bones. https://www.icysedgwick.com/yew/

:) Thanks for the comments, I'll keep the curved glass back panel in mind for... sometime in the future. :) For the drawer fronts I've veneered the Madrona burr onto quartered oak and balanced it with some quartered oak veneer. I had a bit of an idea of how I wanted the finish be on the burr...

    A chest of drawers.

There are a few ways of calculating how graduating drawers diminish and if all else fails then the Golden ratio might help. I did my best with the maths but in the end I cut some MDF rectangles and then cut some more MDF rectangles and just eyeballed it, working on the premise that when it looks...

    A chest of drawers.

Once the Architect's chest of drawers had left the workshop I gathered my thoughts. I'd enjoyed the process but in retrospect I felt the chest appeared heavy with rather solid proportions. Fortunately the Architect too is rather heavy with solid proportions and thus very happy with his new...

    Bleaching wood

Hello Mike, I asked here on UK Workshop about wood bleach back in June this year as I was interested in bleaching oak. The recommendation was to try Oxalic acid crystals and a two pack bleach from Fiddes. Neither of which I've got round to trying yet. Here are some links...
