Work surfaces finished with polyx hard wax oil

My way of doing it is to flood the surface with Osmo, then wipe off the surplus after 15 minutes. I don’t rub down as I find that the surface is smooth with no raised grain. Then recoat once. Yes a wet cup will leave a ring but this disappears after a few minutes.

    Espresso

I’ve had a Gaggia Evolution for the past 10 years. Use it daily for the first coffee of the day for me and my wife, cappuccino for her, macchiato for me. Has given excellent service, I’ve carried out my own servicing and replaced the pump once. If I’m making coffee just for me it’s less faff...

    Extending socket cable

Exactly. Spurs off spurs off spurs are not unknown.

    Extending socket cable

Two cables going to a socket does not necessarily indicate it’s on the ring. The second cable may be going to a spur.

    Shower tiles/grouting

My experience is that this stuff works much better than bleach and is worth the extra.

    gloves?

I like thin gloves when I’m using hand tools. Saves a lot of those annoying nicks, scratches, grazes etc which I seem to collect when I’m doing stuff.

    Drilling cast iron soil pipe

Thanks Lons but it wasn’t so much your observations as the sheer difficulty I’ve found in doing the drilling which has put me off. I’ve already shelled out on the Starrett cutter and I don’t want to commit any more cash to this when I can see a solution which is only marginally less...

    Drilling cast iron soil pipe

Thanks for all those replies fellas, I’ve had a long hard think and I’m throwing in the towel. I’m still not sure I can actually drill through the sodding thing and even if I do the nightmare scenarios described by Lons are truly terrifying. I’m going to get some longer pipe and connect via a...

    Drilling cast iron soil pipe

Sam - I’m certainly capable of that kind of idiocy but not in this case. I’ll have another go tomorrow, keeping it slow, putting oil on it, and applying as much pressure as I can, which is not easy 6 foot up a ladder.

    Drilling cast iron soil pipe

Thanks Trevanion, there seems to be a consensus that cast iron cuts easily so I’m wondering if in fact it might be this ductile iron stuff. The bit I’ve cut looks bright and silvery - can this be a clue as to the metal?

    Drilling cast iron soil pipe

It’s a Starrett, not noted for producing rubbish. And although I’ve been on ages with it the the teeth still feel sharp.

    Drilling cast iron soil pipe

Thanks Sammy, but it certainly ain’t cutting like butter - unless it’s straight out of the freezer.

    Drilling cast iron soil pipe

I’m redoing the bathroom and have decided the most elegant route for the waste is straight through the wall and into the adjacent soil pipe. I have the plastic boss which fits into a 57mm hole in the pipe and looks very neat. However, the challenge is drilling the hole. I’ve watched a YouTube...

    Floor loading for bath

That would have been a shock!

    Floor loading for bath

That’s nice - but unfortunately I don’t have the room for that.

    Floor loading for bath

Thanks all for those prompt replies. Yes Mike, the wall is the side wall of the house, and the span is 2400mm. The bath is supported on claw feet so a spreader on top of the boards is not an option, but as the boards are slightly uneven I think I will drop in a piece of ply even though it is not...

    Floor loading for bath

I'm about to install a bath in the bathroom in our Victorian house - I removed the old grotty one several years back to replace with a shower cubicle, and I am only now getting round to putting one back. This involves knocking down a stud wall so will give me a considerably larger room. We are...

    Sharpening systems: Maguire vs Sellers

And, you don’t need a fancy leather strop, just a piece of mdf with stropping compound smeared on.

    Kitchen Update

I’d go for wood worktop. Mine is walnut. Advantage is you can cut it yourself, and if you treat it with Osmo it is very low maintenance. Converting cupboards to drawers is the way to go. Use reasonable quality runners such as Blum which will handle 30 kg loads.

    Anti-slip treatment for iPhone.

I think the way to approach mobile phones is the same with any tech, ie you are the master and the piece of tech is the slave, not the other way round. I am late 60s but I love the way the mobile enhances my life - WhatsApp to keep in touch with my kids, apps for bird ID when I go out walking...
