Sorry, see what you mean now, some banks are better than others. I’m with Halifax and I find their online systems very efficient. Transfer of monies to other banks is near instantaneous.

    Coronavirus

The govt guarantee of protecting individual bank/savings accounts up to £85k will mean you’re ok even if they go belly up. Unless of course they renege on that due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’

The only ‘medic/scientist as such’ is a professor and so better qualified than me and, I suspect, you. The legal perspective is relevant because the whole EMA thing is about the framework which used to facilitate our access to medicines and now doesn’t. However, pretty pointless to continue...

    Coronavirus

I guess you’re saying I’m ill-informed. So be it. And of course everything in the Guardian is wrong because it’s left leaning, so people can chose to ignore inconvenient truths. Politics determines how ethically carried out science is applied. Eg Trump’s denial of climate change. And the...

Article in the Guardian. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... SApp_Other No, I am no expert in biology, hence why I listen to experts, which by your own admission you are not. And politics of whatever complexion dictates our response to any crisis, so it is highly relevant.

I don’t get this widespread aversion to experts, whether you call them academics or scientists. You wouldn’t get an elected politician to advise you on how to make a dovetailed drawer.

    Coronavirus

Really? Quite apart from the fact that most experts (including the previous chief medical officer) disagree with the government approach, his and his party’s blind doctrinal approach to Brexit means that we have left those EU bodies which coordinate research into a vaccine and its subsequent...

Entry hall table for a niece

Thanks Derek, that’s clearly a very accurate solution. I’m looking forward to how you finish the piece.

Derek, was your heart in your mouth when you did that routing on the front of the drawers, given all the work you’d already put into them? One mm out and the thing would have been ruined. I wouldn’t have the balls.

    Small glazed box (hand tools)

I meant to say...because a piece is on a small scale, to think it is somehow easy is a mistake

    Small glazed box (hand tools)

A lovely bit of work Andy. I like the way you have thought about the possibility of grain direction resulting in a chunk coming out and taking action to avoid it. I know from bitter experience that because a piece is on a small scale it is somehow easy. Good photos too.

Does anyone have a sharpening question?

Forget all the other questions..you say your rounded bevel cuts beautifully...so get on with the rest of your life.

I stand corrected re the solidity of the vice. I can now see that the issue is with the position of the hold downs. Still, it’s not affected your ability to produce those superb joints.

Great video Derek, I enjoyed the views of your tools as well as your skills. Also the sound track - exotic Aussie birds? One question re your vice (Morson?). It looks a bit flexible when you put your weight against it. Is this a drawback in practice?

Without knowing exactly how your wife abuses them, Osmo Top Oil is pretty good for worktops.

    En-suite - sequence of work/questions

Roger, I’ve revisited my records and find that the board I used was not Orbry but Marmox. I would definitely recommend it over hardiebacker, easier to handle and cut. If you go that route you need the special fixing washers.

I used this stuff as backing board: https://www.tilefixdirect.com/product/O ... cker-Board Lighter than hardiebacker but does the same job. When fixing to studs as I did I took the opportunity to stuff some 25mm celotex in there.

    En-suite - sequence of work/questions

Sorry Roger, missed your last little query. If I remember correctly, I think the mix was a bricklaying mortar, ie 4:1 with a bit of plasticiser.

    En-suite - sequence of work/questions

On my suspended floor I took off the floorboards under the shower tray footprint and then screwed battens to the joists so I could insert pieces of 18mm ply flush with the top of the joists. This gave me a solid base 22mm below the floor level. I then bedded the tray on a layer of mortar on the...
