    Coffee Table Design

I like your idea Chris of creating little steps on the inside corner of each rail, in that case going with larger rails as John says makes even more sense to give the required substance around the mortise. I see the point too about the generally accepted aesthetic that the top should overhang...

    Coffee Table Design

Hi John Good question re how I'm fitting the top. I did intend to just drop it into the frame formed by the aprons and rest it on battens but of course I have since realised that with M&Ts the inside of the frame will not be continuous where it meets each leg unless I make the aprons even...

    Coffee Table Design

Hi John, thanks for that advice. Good idea re the apron thickness needed for the tenons, which I think I will have a go at cutting on the bandsaw, and do the mortises with the router.

    Coffee Table Design

Hi all. Would appreciate some advice re a coffee table I plan to make using a chess board which is about 60cm square, with a rather nice veneer on the reverse. I would like to be able to flip the board so that I can use the veneered side, so am thinking of a frame with battens on the inside...

    Advice on router cutters

Once again thanks for the advice. I think it is a really valid point to balance the cost against expected usage. I will probably get a couple of straight cutters initially and then build up from there as needed.

    Advice on router cutters

Many thanks for the prompt and very helpful replies. The Trend website is particularly good in summarising the various types and their uses so that will be a good guide for me in choosing which to get. Interesting too re the advice on mortices - I don't aspire to that kind of monumental work in...

    Advice on router cutters

Hi All. Would appreciate some advice re router cutters. I've just replaced my old Elu 1/4 inch router with the Festool OF1400, mainly due to the positive reviews from Custard and others on here. So I have a number of 1/4 inch cutters but want to add to them gradually with 1/2 inch cutters but am...

    Arse!

To add to Matt Roberts experience - the other week I was using the Festool TS55 to cut some ply on the MFT top with parf dogs to hold the piece square and just as the cut was finishing there was a shower of silvery particles. I had carelessly positioned one of the dogs in the line of the cut and...

    Oiling Walnut Kitchen Worktop

I have walnut worktops, initially as per the recommendation of the company I bought them from I used Danish oil. This was v disappointing, after a couple of weeks dry patches appeared so re-oiled but never able to get a consistent finish which lasted more than a few weeks. So about 6 months ago...

Removing a fireplace, a question or two.

I was looking for something like a dangerously insecure lintel supporting the entire weight of the house so took me a couple of seconds to spot it - a real laugh-out-loud moment - excellent!

Removing a fireplace, a question or two.

If it helps to have a price comparison, my stove is a DG Ivar, highly recommended by the guys at stove fitters, and IMO is a quality piece of kit, beautifully engineered, cost £900. I have completed the opening myself, lining with hardiebacker, levelled the hearth and finished with granite tiles...

Removing a fireplace, a question or two.

I've prepped my dining room fireplace for a wood burner. Used to house the Baxi back boiler before fitting a combi in the bathroom a couple of years back. I used the advice here: http://www.stovefitterswarehouse.co.uk, which has been invaluable. All done now, waiting for HETAS fitter to come in...

What is the going cost for boiler replacement these days

Oops, obviously touched a nerve there, for which I apologise. I was just quoting what several er, technicians, have said to me in the past

What is the going cost for boiler replacement these days

Had a baxi back boiler c 1990 when we moved in in 2000. Never got the house anywhere near hot. Stored water supplied from a header tank which due to the building design only just provided enough head to give a weak flow at hot taps. Had a combi installed about 3 years ago. Heating engineer...

    Festool CTL Midi for Soot

Hi W2S. Thanks for the reply, yes there are some loose lumps of mortar as well, quite crumbly which I am reluctant to disturb further. I was wary of using the Festool for such a filthy task so I will take your advice and just cope with the mess till I've got the recess lined.

    Festool CTL Midi for Soot

Hi all I'm preparing the old fireplace in readiness for woodburner installation. It used to house the old back boiler which was stripped out 3 years ago and replaced by a combi in the bathroom. Because of the size of the original fireplace I'm guessing that when the house was built (1900s) it...

Cheaper alternative to MFT fixed clamps?

I agree with Lurker. I am a bit of a Festool junkie but £60+ for 2 clamps? No way. I have simply cut a narrow rectangle of ply (about 4 'holes' long) corner to corner to make 2 right angle triangles then wedge them between the workpiece and 2 Parf dogs. Different size wedges and a few bits of...
