    Newel Post

Thanks for all your replies. I did think about stripping It in situ but wasn't sure if it would be as effective as removing it but I will certainly consider it. Jacob - you make a very valid point re the principles of restoration, and I do appreciate the value of that banister, the patina it has...

    Newel Post

Thanks for the reply. The post is fixed at the top with screws which I've removed but I don't know how it is fixed at the bottom. I want that fixing to be as robust as possible when I put the post back to stabilise the banister. But the idea of chopping out the spindles to give enough play to...

    Newel Post

Hi all. Wasn't sure whether to put this in general chat but hopefully my query is relevant to this forum. The staircase in my Victorian house has what I think is a cast iron newel post which over the years has been successively painted over to the point where the detail of the casting has been...

    Electric radiator for tiny bathroom

Our bathroom is similarly sized. A couple of years back I installed a fan heater high on the wall with a pull cord switch, wired to a fused spur inside the airing cupboard so met the regs. We switch this on when we get in the shower and by the time we get out it's toasty.

    How Much Does Woodworking Cost?

AJB Temple makes a valid point re the money you can save by investing in tools when undertaking home improvements. My track saw and vacuum cost £800 but enabled me to refit my kitchen with custom made drawer boxes and fronts and walnut worktops to millimetric accuracy. This saved say £2k on...

    Building my own worktop

I made a similar corner worktable for my wife from beech worktop. I made a jig from 9mm MDF as I didn't want to spend money on something I would use only once, then joined the two pieces with worktop connectors. Worked a treat.

Craft it yourself C4 8pm tonight

While it's good to see new programmes that aren't Holby/Strictly/One Show/Golf/Wimbledon etc etc I found this disappointing. It contained the annoying camera, editing and music gimmicks that seem to blight some programmes and only reduce the time available to convey actual information. And the...

    Computer Service Concerns

Updates to Apple software are free. And I take Pete's point re security of Macs but as long as hackers target Windows machines rather than Macs that makes them more secure.

    Computer Service Concerns

Simple answer, though not much use for you with your immediate issue, is to buy a Mac. I spent countless hours of my life trying to fettle Windows PCs before I went Apple. Macs are very secure, no need for anti virus software and constantly updating it, you don't have to be a computer geek to...

    Oak worktop suppliers.

I've had beech worktop to make a sewing table for my wife and walnut ones for kitchen. Excellent quality and delivery by two efficient and courteous chaps. Can thoroughly recommend. Nick

    Picture Framing Mitres

For wider section framing, say greater than 40mm, I have used my track saw with MFT table top and Parf dogs. Very accurate. Nick

    Lidl Japanese Saw

I didn't realise the handle was removable, will see how long it lasts. Version is 01/2017, and made in Germany. And it does cut on both sides on the pull stroke. Nick

    Lidl Japanese Saw

Saw this in the Lidl paper last week and picked one up today. It's much bigger than I expected for some reason and got some wisecrack comments from the bloke on the checkout, but it cuts nicely and for £6.99 what's not to like. Nick

When will this pallet furniture trend end?

The pallet that my last load of logs for the stove came in had some ash slats. Planed up by hand and made a couple of nice picture frames.

Oak vs Beech worktops - is Oak worth the Premium?

I have walnut treated with Osmo. Very pleased with them.

    Xact Router Table

Thanks Glynne for that mini review - v useful. If the basic setup is pretty solid I would be happy to do some mods along the lines you suggest. Sunnybob - valid point. I did make a table several years back but did not take much care over the materials. I used bog standard 18mm MDF which...

    Xact Router Table

Thanks for those thoughts fellas. I too am suspicious of the good reviews and would really want to see it in the flesh before committing to buy. It's also a bit much I think to ask nearly as much again for what should be standard kit i.e. NVR switch and featherboards.

    Xact Router Table

Hi all. Does anyone have any experience of this sold by Rutlands? http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+rtx2000-xa ... le+RTX2000 It looks like a bargain but that, of course, is only the case if it's any good. Nick
