    My First Box

Thanks Custard and others, I really appreciate the encouragement. I like the idea of box making - you can make a lot out of a little timber!

    My First Box

I never thought of that re the box lining. It makes sense though. Thanks again to all for the nice comments.

    My First Box

Thanks for the compliments fellas. Am awaiting hinges, also deciding how to finish the inside. I am veering towards covering only the base with leather, as it seems a shame to hide the nice grain of the wood. I’ll post further pics when done.

    My First Box

Thanks both. Carl - it’s about 200mm square.

    My First Box

I have been woodworking most of my life but put myself in the timber butchery category rather than anything approaching joinery. I know much of the theory but have not really tried to put it into practice. This forum has provided the inspiration for me to attempt something a bit more skilful and...

Oh no not another table saw post..

I would echo the suggestion re consideration of a track saw. It obviously depends on what work you need to do but I find my Festool invaluable. With some imagination and creative use of jigs it can carry out a wide range of cutting tasks.

    Question re Acrylic Sanding Sealer

Hi Chas. That’s really helpful, thanks.

    Question re Acrylic Sanding Sealer

I’m in the process of making a small box out of mahogany and ash and as I need to finish the lid before assembly I am looking for some advice re the finish. I understand that the open grain nature of both woods would benefit from the filling abilities of sanding sealer, and am looking for a...

Stair paint. Alternatives to gloss. Any tips?

I’ve just done all the woodwork in my hall and (large) staircase with Valspar Trade Eggshell. I really like it - water based so no smell, quick drying and covers well in two coats. Time will tell if it is hard wearing. A tip - it needs really good stirring before use, the first tin I bought...

    Help - Bleach Damage

I don’t think any finish would resist the HG bleach. I’ve never seen anything like it for getting mould off tile grout and silicon sealant. Anyway, I used 240g to sand around the damage until the mark disappeared. I then used Danish Oil in Canadian Cedar shade that I had left over from doing...

    Help - Bleach Damage

Thanks. I did suspect that the only option would be a complete strip but I will certainly try the localised repair.

    Help - Bleach Damage

Hi, looking for some help. I received a bottle of HG mould spray via mail order, this is a very effective and powerful bleach based chemical. I put it on my dining table and left it there for about 20 minutes, when I came to move it I found that it had leaked in transit, causing the damage you...

    Bosch 1200 ae router

Re the guide rail, I can’t comment on the Bosch but I have used my Festool with guide rail to v groove about 20 metres of MDF to replicate T&G and it was quick and superbly accurate.

    Bosch 1200 ae router

But it will take an 8mm collet so slightly beefier. When I upgraded to a Festool OF1400 with 1/2 inch collet I put the Bosch into a home made table and it’s great for doing edge mouldings.

If the middle shelf and rail are thick enough, half lap joint along their lengths?

Plywood for lining out workshop walls

I’m aware I’m not answering your question, but isn’t plywood overkill for this job? Why not OSB? It’s a lot cheaper and just as functional as ply, eg ability to take screws, support shelves etc.

    Thud

Had a bit of a shock this morning. Heard a massive bang from the porch, sounded like a car had crashed into the front door, was relieved to discover it was only the new Festool catalogue landing on the mat. Pity the poor postman.

    Ceramic fibre board

How about this? I’ve no experience of this but it looks very similar to what our stove fitter used when installing our stove, and this is excellent at throwing the heat into the room. http://www.real-fire.co.uk/insulating-s ... -365-p.asp
