    Remembering Grandad

No political skew intended, nor any wish to demean the sacrifice given by our servicemen and women, just a gentle observation that war inevitably causes many more casualties to civilians, who never have the choice of volunteering to be on the front line.

    Remembering Grandad

We should also remember the 6,000+ “ordinary” people killed in the Nuremberg bombing raids.

    Axminster Precision Rules

Fair point. For the sake of clarity, I meant the Axi Precision. It certainly works for me.

    Axminster Precision Rules

The clue is in the thread title - ‘Axminster Precision’. Mine’s the 150mm.

    sharpening kitchen knives

I also don’t like the twin wheel thing, which also leaves razor sharp slivers of steel over the worktop. I use a steel to tickle the edge every time I use the knife and credit card sized DMT diamond (I think 400 grit) every now and then.

    Lignum Vitae

Pete - very kind of you, I’ll pm you later today when I’ve measured up.

    Lignum Vitae

I’ve been given advice in a separate thread re replacing my bandsaw blade guides with LV. I’m trying to source what would be a tiny amount of the stuff (4 pieces about 5mm square by 30 mm long). So I’ve looked at pen blanks as the most logical way to achieve these sizes economically. Trouble is...

Osmo filler. Dries quick and sands well.

    Axminster Precision Rules

I have this rule and I must say it’s the best I have ever had. In my workshop lighting it is extremely clear and easy to read, the best thing I like about it is that if you don’t need the half mm edge you just flip it over and you get the full mm scale.

    Inca Euro 205

    Thanks for the info musicman.

    Inca Euro 205

Thanks for info, I shall buy a piece of LV and cut it down. The reason I want to replace is that the alloy ones are quite worn and they obviously cause more drag on the blade than either bearing guides or those that self lubricate like LV.

    Inca Euro 205

I don’t know why I thought the guides I have were graphite, of course they are some kind of alloy. Interesting re the ceramic blocks, but I’ve looked at a vid of the 260 and it is bigger than the 205 and has a different guide set up. The lignum vitae solution looks attractive and doable, and...

    Inca Euro 205

Thanks for those replies, I have seen the Axi ones but thought they are of a size more suited to bigger machines than the Inca. I may well pop into my local store to have a dekko.

    Inca Euro 205

I’ve had this bandsaw for many years, and for my purposes it punches well above its weight. The machine’s only weakness is its lateral blade guides which are graphite blocks. I have searched in the past for replacement bearing type guides and all I could find were some very expensive US sourced...

Money for nothing or what a load of bo***cks

Can’t disagree. Though the Scottish blacksmith does some nice stuff.

What should my next powertool spend be?

I forgot to mention the track saw’s dust extraction capability. I have used mine in the living room with virtually zero dust being emitted.

Fixing tongue and groove sheets to wall

I think that’s overkill. I have done similar in my hall and stairs, though used standard 9 mm MDF which I routed to get the grooves. I put a line of adhesive top and bottom, a few squiggles in between, then fixed with a few pins which I drove home with a punch then filled.

What should my next powertool spend be?

Fair point, but track saw is quicker (no need to clamp guide, just position it on the work), produces an edge which requires no further finishing, and can be used with an MFT top (not the Festool one, a cheaper looky-likely) to do bang on accurate angled cuts. And the track can also be used with...

    UK Passport on line

I have to say that the online HMRC service is excellent. I think that 99% of the time, civil servants are actually very efficient at delivering technical innovation. It’s only when politicians get involved (a la UC) that things go t*ts up.

    Not THAT router, THIS router

Wouldn’t the building issues (ie lots of rebar) rule out a wireless solution?
