Best flat/matt paint for underworks of pine bench.

Sorry, but that is just wrong. I am no expert in the finer points of paint chemistry but I do know that water based paint has improved tremendously over the last few years. I painted my outdoor bench and bird tables with Bedec 2 years ago and they’re as good now as when I did them. Water based...

    Bobby's next kitchen

Nice work. And an impressive amount of grog.

    Log burner in garage advice

The log burner in my lounge does not have a room sealed air supply, just the ‘normal’ ventilation which comes in via the doors etc in my leaky Victorian house. However, I have never noticed any draughts, I think the combustion process is so efficient that the demand for air is well controlled.

    Log burner in garage advice

You can also get stoves with an external, ie room sealed, air inlet.

What’s that winch type thing on the wall in the utility?

    Log burner in garage advice

Have a look at this site: https://www.stovefittersmanual.co.uk I don’t know if there are specifics re your situation but there is lots of good advice re flues, bends etc.

    Birch ply MFT protection.

That’s what I do. Doug71’s method of having the cut over the edge of the top has one big disadvantage - dust collection is significantly impaired, at least it is with a Festool setup.

    Iroko strip double-glazed front door

Matthew, just had a look at your website, some really nice projects there, I like the sort of minimalist look which seems to be your design preference, eg in your ply storage unit. Excellent work!

    Sold STP

Yes really! I find I use the additional chuck quite often, when I need size of bit which I haven’t got in my set of centrofix Fisch bits. Also really useful for Dremel type mini tool attachments. But the piece of resistance is the angle chuck. That has got me out of trouble so many times. Also...

    Sold STP

Just to say that I’ve got one of these and it is probably the most used tool in my box. It seems pricey new but worth every penny. But I don’t need a second one!

    Child Genius

Interesting Mike, my eldest son is a bit like your daughter, he was into politics from an early age and by the age of 13 he knew every parliamentary constituency in the UK and their MPs, majority etc. We were similarly in awe of his intellect, but never pushed him, he knew what he wanted to...

    Child Genius

The disturbing thing about this programme is the pushiness of the parents. It verges on emotional abuse.

    Ash Side table

That’s really nice. There seems to be a bit of a fashion now for painted frame with natural wood tops which I like. I’ve refurbished an old Welsh dresser like this, painting white everything other than the top which I sanded back and waxed.

Replace double glazing unit - stupid idea?

    New boiler.

Yes, you don’t want a header tank. Outdated technology.

    rabbet joint for MDF cabinet

Depends on the make of router and your track, and if they are compatible (eg Festool) you’ll need another bit of gear anyway to connect the router to the track. Instead, just clamp a straight edge or wood batten across the sheet of MDF and run the router along that.

Replace double glazing unit - stupid idea?

Thanks for the suggestions, I don’t have the skill/inclination to make centre hinge windows and not sure how that would work with plastic frames, but the idea of simply covering the inside with a sheet of thin ply has legs.
