Need some advice please... MDF painting

Have you tried laying off the paint with a decent synthetic filament brush while still wet?

Recommend me a starter router table setup for less than £500

On my home made table the only money I’ve spent is on one length of T track for the fence to take featherboard hold downs. I secure the fence to the table with 2 cramps, and as Mike says there is no need for it to be parallel to the front of the table. I’ve not bothered with making a lift, I’ve...

    Osmo on worktop

I do two coats which I feel is enough. I put on a generous coat then wipe off the excess after 15 minutes. I usually recoat with one application every year or so.

Those of you who live in France and Spain......

1000 miles? I wish you the best of luck. I believe the original TdF riders used to combat saddle sores with a bit of raw steak in their shorts. Would be a bit smelly after 15 days though.

    Simple oak picture frame

Yes I agree, that’s a great job. You’re being too harsh on yourself, I’d be pleased to have that hanging on my wall. Re sourcing timber, every time you pass a skip, stop and have a look. It’s amazing what you can find. I’ve just made a small table using tulipwood for the frame (painted) and a...

    Best fixing for bath panel?

Mirror screws, where a chrome dome screws into the head.

    Piano

Lovely piece of work. I particularly like the reference to what it was originally, a real heritage item.

    Building up sub-floor

Thanks Mike. I don’t fancy knocking out an air brick for every inter joist space so I’ll go with the holes in the joists and just an airbrick at each end.

    Building up sub-floor

Cheers Mike, there are no services under the floor as far as I can see, and I don't think any new concrete would breach the DPM. However, your comment re the feasibility of packing up a new timber floor has made me rethink that option. There is no subfloor ventilation so I can easily knock a...

    74 years ago today?

Where indeed does it/should it end? We seem to be increasingly celebrating anniversaries of the start of wars, end of wars, starts and ends of individual battles, natural disasters, man-made disasters (eg mass shootings) etc. And the anniversaries are not just the obvious ones, ie 50 years, 75...

    Building up sub-floor

My son has a small utility room attached to the rear of his 1960's house. It is about 2m by 2.5m. The floor is springy and uneven. We lifted the flooring the other day and found that there is a concrete sub floor (which is bone dry) on which the previous owners placed timber 'joists' about 100mm...

    Plumbing question

I have that obsession too. In a previous life I inspected children’s homes, used to drive the staff mad when I pointed out the wonky picture frames. And my other beet noir is tangled phone handset cables (dying out now due to the prevalence of cordless models) - but if I see one I just HAVE to...

    Money abroad - who's a seasoned traveller?

FWIW, Halifax no longer require you to inform them of foreign trips. It may be the case for other banks too now, presumably because their algorithms for detecting potential fraud are more sophisticated.

    Money abroad - who's a seasoned traveller?

In general you are correct but you should use a no-fee card like Halifax Clarity. You will be charged interest on cash withdrawals from the day after the transaction but the trick is to pay off the card via your online banking the same day to avoid the fee. And you get your cash at the...

sticking Formica to a ply wall

Fair point, I’d forgotten how thin and bendy Formica is.

sticking Formica to a ply wall

In my case Mike, the board was supported at the bottom by the skirting and at the top by a dado rail screwed to the wall. Contact adhesive would have been overkill.

sticking Formica to a ply wall

I’d have thought any glue which goes in a gun, eg No More Nails. I used that to stick mdf wallboard to my hall over anaglypta and it worked a treat. Good grab but easy to make adjustments by sliding.

    Measuring aids maintenance

I believe that the physical manifestations of reference SI units are now redundant, having been replaced by definitions related to constants of nature, eg Planck’s. So perhaps we should replace physical squares with some apparatus which measures the number of wavelengths of light between 0 and...
