Would like to know where I can find this tool please

Welcome. The tool looks double-ended. Is it possible to drill some fixing holes in the broken stub? You might then be able to attach a handle and use the good end to do the job.

How to remove an immersion heater element?

Help needed please. There is a horizontal element at the bottom of a copper cylinder, which needs replacing. The electrics and draining the cylinder are no problem, but the @*gg£& just will not unscrew from the tank. I have a box spanner and enough other tools. I have tried sharp taps with a...

Big questions, stretching the imagination and no answers

The term "big bang" was created by astronomer Fred Hoyle to mock the theory it names. I ask myself "what has all this got to do with the price of bread?"

Record no5 Jack Plane - restoration

Some interesting points from planesleuth. However, it seems to me it all depends on the point of the rebuild/restoration. At one extreme there is trying freeze the plane in time, as a depiction of a historical artifact. At the other is turning it back into a useful tool with no regard to its...

Big questions, stretching the imagination and no answers

If there is intelligent life out there, it will make sure it hides from us. We would plunder its resources, try to kill it, or attempt to use it as an ally to dominate other people on this planet.

Record no5 Jack Plane - restoration

Your plane is looking good. There is an awesome resource for dating record planes at https://recordhandplanes.com/dating.html Using this resource, the frog and lateral adjustment lever put your plane at 1959 to 1988. The two-part pressed steel Y yoke puts it at the late 60's onwards. From the...

    Guns,guns, and more Guns

If the only tool you have is a hammer, then every problem gets treated as if it is a nail. Officers in a confrontational situation can be presented with anything on a continuum that ranges from harsh language at one extreme, to lethal force at the other. Officers in the UK are required to react...

    Tool chest

Looks great. I suggest the "El Ftr", stands for "Electrical Fitter". My dad was a radio fitter in the RAF. He once explained the difference to me between a mechanic and a fitter. A mechanic "just" repaired things with parts as supplied. If a fitter didn't have the parts, he made them.

    Spinney No 4 plane restoration

I bought this plane cheap to experiment with different cleaning techniques. I had never heard of Spinney before seeing this. If anyone has knowledge of who made it and when, I would love to know. I suspect it was made around the early 60's. It has brass fittings and wooden handles, but there...

For Sale/Swap Stanley Router plane reduced

Sorry, it doesn't augur well for the augers. As for a bigger house, my workshop is a 7 foot by 3 shed, with a space in front of it I have nicknamed "The Plaza". The rest of the house is in proportion, so I can't see you wanting a swap there! Besides, SWMBO has just planted some peonies in the...

    Another Joke

When I was little I asked my dad what he wanted for his birthday. He replied "a crate of guinness and a bunny girl". It was a quite a few years until I understood why my mum hit him.

Things you say that got you into the dog house.

A "no win" situation is when she asks "does my bum look big in this?" What can you say that doesn't get you into trouble? Claiming your right to silence fails miserably.

    What Oil stone to get?

This oil on wood thing is interesting. I bought a set of six Wickes chisels in a plastic case a few months ago - plenty good enough for a novice like me. I oiled them to keep rust at bay, and found the oil was staining wood that I was working on. I found out from youtube how to make my own...

    Another Joke

During the latter part of Trump's reign as president as re-election approached, he decided to curry favour with some influential leaders of the native Americans. Various chiefs and elders were invited to an all expenses paid lunch, followed by a speech. After a sumptuous meal, the large...
