Quality front door hinge and hardware advice

As suggested, the quality of the door and frame, judging by the price paid, will be hardly worth worrying about the quality of the fittings and furniture. I regret that you have bought a couple of pieces of cheap imported carp and will be lucky to make it look acceptable. A decent softwood door...

    Trend Diamond Cross Sharpening Plates

I bought a spindle moulder block from Trend which was obviously faulty, I photographed the item and sent the pic with an email requesting that it be sorted. I got a return email saying that it looked as if the block had done a lot of work and it was high time I purchased a new one! When told it...

Show me your dust/chip extraction system!

Look at a post dated 14 May 2016 called dust extraction. Don't listen to the penny pinching clowns who advocate plastic pipes and home made blast gates ! Do it once properly. The Fox 842 extractor seems to take some beating .(£250.00) there is plenty of advice on here, it's a question asked...

    Sapele,Cedar, Iroko..

I have an Iroko garden bench that has lasted 24 years of real neglect , that was glued with Cascamite. I've just thrown out 1.5 Kg pot of Polyvine Cascamite which took four days to go rubbery on test, it ain't the same animal! I'm only prepared to trust epoxy today.

    Sapele,Cedar, Iroko..

At that size I would suggest M & T joints a centre rail and a material thickness of 35mm. If it's glazed it needs to be laminated glass.

    Sapele,Cedar, Iroko..

Sapele and Iroko are about the same price normally. Sapele has always been a little cheaper than utile and is a little more difficult to work without tear out . Iroko is easy to work and will normally last thirty years in outside use. It MUST be glued with epoxy glue and you need to understand...

    Ash Interor 4 Panel Door

IT would be better to stack the timber in stick inside the house to acclimatise before machining to make the doors. The longer it's there the better.

what exactly is this used for and how ?

As Jacob said only usefull for marking out, you need a nice big area to rest the paring chisel on to guide it. I can't see why you would wish to mark the mitres out rather than simply cut them though?

    Ash Interor 4 Panel Door

Seasonal movement is the main drawback to solid panels, they will move every year with any change in moisture levels. If you inadvertently glue the panels into the frame they will split. Some people make it a practice to pre finish the panels to avoid the problem of shrinkage showing bare...

    Working with pallet wood

I am amazed by the number of times I see reference to the use of pallet wood for woodworking. Let me suggest an experiment to prove the point. II After you have obtained a sample of pallet wood, go to a decent timber merchant and ask for a small sample of unsorted grade redwood, tell him why you...

    Inline duct fans

As sunny Bob has said, don't mess about with drainpipes, home made blast gates or any other penny pinching ideas. A two horsepower purpose made extractor preferably in a separate housing is the standard to go for. The Fox 842 features on here with a recommend on price and quality. Purpose made...

    Garden waterwheel

Hi Coley. My wheel is now on its fourth season of winding the figures about, apart from having to glue back a loose magnet every now and then and put on a dab of oil/grease it works pretty well. How did your huge wheel fare? Mike

Planer thicknesser, tear out not break out?

A look at h photo in close up reveals that you are planing a piece with a groove in one edge and taking away all the top surface of the board and leaving the side of the groove without support. It's no suprise that the edge is breaking up. The cut is within the machines capacity but not kind to...

    Cascamite - New User

They are knowingly selling rubbish that fails and costs the user money, why would anyone wish to support them.

    Cascamite - New User

I think you are correct, I phoned polyvine and was eventually put through to a female who was obviously reading rubbish from a script. I was told that moisture had entered the plastic container and this was the reason for the failure. When I enquired about the WBP and asked if this was the...

    Cascamite - New User

Can anyone update me on this story. Yesterday I opened a1.5 K container of polymite structural. After mixing as suggested on the pack I wasn't happy with the appearance of the glue so I used the very last of my old stock of Cascamite for the job in hand. Two test pieces were made with the...

    Using sapwood offcuts

I also send oak sapwood to the burner, it's appearance has no place in a finished product. Appart from its appearance though it's working qualities are identical to heartwood, it cuts, planes etc in the same way and appears to be identical in strength. Some time back a supplier sent some square...

    Bending a cap iron.

I have done this to the cap iron of my record No 4 without problems. It's only a minute bend that is required. I have another perversion to confess - the working end of my cap irons have all been polished to a high shine, it any be nonsense but I think it gives a tiny improvement in performance.

Buying a car on ebay during lock down?

The car trade is well supplied with crooks in normal times, do you really think they will miss a great opportunity like this? You are being asked daily ( no hourly )to stay at home so we all have less use for a car. I can accept that some may need one for work but taking a chance in a known...

Sagging drawer unit made from MDF

The real cause of this problem is the incompetent clown who claimed to be a woodworker. It's a very rare customer who has the sense to even ask about qualifications! We have all seen the transit van with a dozen trades written on the side, the guy inside has probably watched a YouTube video or...
