    Door stop advice please.

Ironmongery Direct have a cord operated door stay. Mikes idea is much cheaper though!

    Door stop advice please.

There is a device that fits at the top of the door and locks in the open position. A cord hangs down and allows you to release the lock. My problem is remembering what it's called!

    Planer/thicknesser issues

I think it's unlikely that the crown effect was caused by wearing way the outer ends of the table by use. Is it not more likely that the casting has distorted for some reason. I have a friend who has operated a 24" wadkin with a side to side dip of about 6mm in the top bed. (The thickness table...

    Planer/thicknesser issues

A machine of that quality normally has a table roller, that's the one set into the bottom table directly beneath the out feed roller if that is not set a the correct height it can produce some strange effects. Have you checked it?

    Planer/thicknesser issues

As already mentioned it looks as if there is a lack of downward pressure on the out feed roller. As suggested the springs may be tired or out of adjustment or you may find that chippings are packed in the area where the roller bearings normally move down to grip the material. Try using a piece...

    Window Screw Jacks

You could use a screw jack and remote winder. A cord operated quadrant opener or even an electric operator.

    Choice of timber

I don't know of a light coloured timber for this job but will happily second the nomination of Iroko.

    Resin/pitch blade cleaner?

Cellulose thinners will present real hazards inside the workshop. I have used it in the fresh air in the past but much prefer soaking the blades in a little white spirit overnight. I must give the oven cleaner a go!

Advice on Cutters for repoducing very old Glazing bars

The photos show what I described, they would be better running with a spelch board bridging the fence gap and giving good attachment for any spacing strips you may use.

Advice on Cutters for repoducing very old Glazing bars

If you use a pressure bar to hold it down and another to press the 12 mm side back to the fence I would expect it to run through the spindle safely.

    Joiners: design critique, please.

Allergies can be a problem and Iroko is very variable in working qualities, I currently have a small quantity of 38mm that has worked as easily as softwood together a with some 63mm supplied from the same source which took the edge off the HSS planer knives after about a metre of planing. A...

    Joiners: design critique, please.

Hi Mike I favour type B purely on the grounds of no external beads, I like the extended top face of the glazing at the bottom rail. What type/s of glass will you be using? What will support the glazed frame in the open position ? If you are climbing out onto the roof using a ladder it needs to...

Advice on Cutters for repoducing very old Glazing bars

Two methods I can suggest are - send the sketch to Whitehill as suggested for a set of cutters to cut the rebate and mould. Or assuming that you have a 125 mm rebate block and a smaller diameter limiter block you could make a simple cutter to just form the ovolo while the two blocks are mounted...

    Replacing sash window's sill

If you can strip the window down and remove the nails without damage, it's still covered in paint and nail holes. There is no premium or pleasure in using old timber. Most box frames are made of pine, even the unsorted grade is cheap to buy and nicer to work.

    Replacing sash window's sill

I don't think it's an economic move to totally dismantle the window to salvage the inner linings. A new window is quicker and obviously better. Likewise grafting pieces into the Pully stiles is not a sensible repair, just a bodge.

    Replacing sash window's sill

If you fit a new window it has been my policy to hang on to the old one until the conservation officer has inspected the new . Some of the COs think they know all about cased frames when the opposite is the truth.

    Replacing sash window's sill

Windows fitted in reveal like that are normally held in place by folding wedges at the ends of the cill and head and are easy to remove. I suggest you prize off one of the architraves and see, repairing the window on the bench is much easier. Your first move should be to check if the bottoms of...

Pushfit soil pipe as dust extraction

Galzanized ducting in 125mm is approx £5.00 and a blast gate the same size is £20 Have a look at Dustspares site.

Pushfit soil pipe as dust extraction

MikeK. I think you must be shopping at the wrong suppliers or someone saw you coming. The difference is not that big.

Pushfit soil pipe as dust extraction

Use the purpose made metal ducting, the blast gates, hanging brackets, and other things will fit together easily, it's fire resistant and won't generate static. It also avoids giving giving an insurance man an ideal excuse to blame you if the worst happens. It won't cost very much more and it's...
