    Sedgwick MB planer dust extraction

You may have seen my version before. Air enters under the edge you can see and at the ends to some extent as well as past the cutter block Ihave a 1.5 HP extractor and have never had any problems. I think it could be made in timber.

Used power tools, how big a discount on new will you accept?

As honest woodworkers we all have a responsibility to ensure that we are not providing a ready market for tools stolen from other woodworkers. I don't think that's easy on eBay so I avoid using it. The comment about seeing and trying the item is also very true. Please don't be offended by this...

    Carpenters tool box?

I had a suitcase type until I grew tired.of laying it down in the car boot and have the tools all over the place. This two part box stands upright and keeps things tidy

Planer Thicknesser in a small workshop, worth it?

A planer thicknesser is a great move particularly if it's British cast iron rather than Chinese rubbish. One word of caution regarding lifting any machine of this kind! Don't under any circumstances lift it by the planer top bed. Lifting straps must go beneath the machine or the thicknessing...

    Hinge jigs

These two tools are good for speeding up and making the job simple. The Eclipse no 34 butt gauge is used to mark the back edge of the hinge on both the door and rebated frame using the part shown on top. The thickness of the hinge leaf is marked with the bottom part of the gauge. I always...

    Hinge jigs

There are a number of YouTube videos showing how to hang doors, I've just had a look.If you feel that you are able to plane the door to size to fit the frame, fitting the hinges is easy.

    Hinge jigs

That's a reckless amount of money for a gadget that you don't really need. The shop made item speeds the job up and costs nothing, but you can easily do the job by hand.

    Hinge jigs

This type made from bits of scrap is useful if working on new materials but if the doors are being fitted to existing frames the hinge cut outs are normally dictated by a the existing sinkings in the frame or casing. It's quicker to cut them by hand . If you do make a template do put all the...

Strange spindle moulder usage on Youtube

Mike. It's common practice to run a saw blade or grooving tool on a vertical spindle moulder. But not like that!

Strange spindle moulder usage on Youtube

droogs has taken the words from my mouth. If you wished to do that why not a normal straight fence, spelch board, and pressure bar,and take the cut from the bottom. Add a guard to stop the off cuts from flying round the shop and you have a sane working method. He's got,to be a Donald supporter!

    Training apprentices

Spindle moulders have always had a well deserved nasty reputation. I once worked with cracking good joiner who disappeared overnight together with his tools when the boss told him he would be working the spindle moulder the following day.

    Training apprentices

It depends on the individual. Some people have what I call "machine sense" others may never be safe to work unsupervised. The chap who originally showed me how to do it had bits missing from both hands and never did seem to have a grip on safety. He was however capable of turning out good work...

SEBG I only buy prime grade European oak in £1500 batches. The last lot,was delivered by an *****,who dumped it on a neighbours drive four doors from my house in the pouring rain. Im certainly not giving them a recommend. There is currently lunacy at large in the timber trade, my son has just...

A former supplier of mine stopped allowing self selection on the grounds that some customers spent a long time turning over boards with a member of staff helping, and then chose two or three boards to purchase. A minimum purchase of a few hundred pounds would have sorted the problem but they...

    Planer Thicknesser blade sharpening tool

I use a diamond hone 150mm X 50mm to hone HSS knives in the block. The block is held steady by raising a piece of timber on the thicknessing bed until it meets the, cutter block. I think it's important not to rest the hone on the cutter block behind the knives as this wears a flat on the block...

    Replacing stairs

I think your chances of a satisfactory outcome rest on the quality of the existing work, and as Mike says the task of removing wedges and treads/ risers while leaving the strings intact. I would expect it to be much more satisfactory, quicker, and easier to make a new flight and simply remove...
