    Band saw cutting issues

I bought a Record bandsaw some years back, the blade that came with it was rubbish! I suggest a 3tpi skip tooth blade from tuff saws. The after sales service on the Record was spot on though.

Resharpenable saws or throw away saws?

I have a 22" 10 TPI Disston which now acts as a badge of office in th lid of my tool box. Use the Stanley jet cut which costs less to replace than the time taken to sharpen the Disston. I tried to buy a Disston for my son about twenty years back, my friend at the ironmongers laughed and told me...

Putting a table saw on wheels?

Here is the table saw and cross cut. The table saw is moved by inserting a piece of timber under the table to lift the front legs of the floor. The steel for all of them came from the steel stockholders scraps and off cuts bin.

Putting a table saw on wheels?

I think these are pretty self explanatory. Mine holds a mortiser and has served for years without problem. Pulling the lever rotates the castors into contact with the floor. The rear castors are straight line and the front ones swivel. The only difficult part was getting the machine in there!

How to Season A slice from a Beech Stump?

This question of drying slices comes up frequently, I think it's very tricky to get the desired result. The shrinkage along the growth rings in most species is much greater than that across the rings, so tapered cracks normally appear radially with the wider end at the outside. I have seen it...

Can anyone help me identify this Rail and Stile bit?

It might be a spindle moulding cutter, try looking at numbers around 136/8 in the 40 X 4 range of Wealden spindle cutters.

What would you charge for this?

A number of years back I visited a terrible kitchen extension. When asked the owner said he was at a loss to explain it, the chap who built it had worked for years at B and Q !!

What would you charge for this?

I second Doug21s remarks about public liability insurance. I have known people who have worked for years without it but it's not a sensible move. You could lose literally everything.

    Hammer F3 or similar?

The JCB production line was halted recently because of a shortage of valves made in China. Perhaps they rate as less essential parts? These companies are intent on making a saving but are cutting off the branch they are sitting on.

    Hammer F3 or similar?

Both of the companies seem to have bases in China so my remark still stands.

    Hammer F3 or similar?

I am happy to speak up for the Sedgewick SM3. I've owned mine for more than 20 years without fault. Some appear to have alloy fences with little or no provision for fitting a false fence. Avoid the Chinese rubbish no matter what label has been stuck on it.

    What is this vice worth?

My bench was made from pine my dad had earmarked for firewood. The two items have lasted well and made money.

    What is this vice worth?

I have the identical vice that I bought second hand in 1965 for £3-10 It's been worked hard and is still good today. In 1965 that price was about twelve hours pay for a joiner. As already mentioned you need to test it to ensure that it doesn't "jump out of gear" when tightened.

Strange design of park bench- any ideas?

I think a tram with sixty or seventy of those on board wouldn't go very far. It was normal for trams to have knife board reversible seats as already mentioned.

Moving the table saw in the workshop

This works nicely to move my mortiser. Minimum cost if you can access a welding machine. It was a struggle to get.the machine in there though. The front castors are, swivel and the back ones fixed.

    Wadkin Vs Wadkin Bursgreen

The above remarks may be correct for the car manufacturers wrecked by unions and management, but we had a thriving furniture industry until clowns in the Cotswolds started "carefully assembling" the contents of containers from China. In the case of machinery and tooling it's very difficult to...

    Wadkin Vs Wadkin Bursgreen

I'm pleased to find that someone has the sense to reject the Chinese rubbish disguised thinly with a locally applied badge. It's high time substantial duties are applied to imports that destroy our industries. It's becoming impossible to avoid the work of the drop shippers who never even see...

    Beam planers for hire?

I'm not certain but the risk of injury to hirers may prevent anyone renting out such a tool. If the timber is new it may be cheaper to get it planed by a local joinery firm.
