The rights and wrongs of wood glue!

I was taught that the thinnest glue line is the strongest, the edges must be hand planed to remove any machine marks and make a perfect fit. Finally the timber should be glued together straight after planing to prevent the surfaces oxidising in the air for best results.

    Dust Extraction Ducting

A twelve metre run of pipe must mean a decent size workshop! I suggest you need an extractor which can cope with the machinery you are likely to invest in when your hobby takes a hold. I designed my own small workshop system having seen a number of profession and amateur set ups down the years...

    Record Band Saw BS350

The photo looks exactly the same as the guides beneath the table of my BS500. This is a good system for use over the table but very iffy below it. In my case a small piece of off cut material went through the table insert and dropped between the bearings, the result was a shattered alloy casting...

    How things have changed

Last time I saw a glowing report on using a domino machine, the cost of the machine exceeded what I payed for a full size floor standing mortiser. Likewise a decent power router can do all the jobs that a biscuit jointer is capable of and many more, again for a modest cost. There is no real...

    Current Magazines

Hi Matthew I used to write for some of the magazines but gave it up when my pay rate was halved by a new policy, the mag in question decided to pay only on a per 1000 word basis and not for the pictures. Since woodworking explanations involve photos in large numbers it killed the incentive to...

    Looking for hinges

As already suggested, move the hinge line forward by the thickness of the cushion and consider using a gas strut to hold the lid open. If you arrange the strut correctly it will hold the lid open and closed. It takes a little to get your head round it but it works. I use the system on the...

Oak framed, ledged and braced door construction

Yes I think that's right. It was a great success on the staircases but I've not used it on a door. I think there is every chance it will look the part. Mike.

Oak framed, ledged and braced door construction

In the instance of the stair case I used a groove about 18mm wide an a bead that projected above the surface of the outer face. It would probably be better in the case of the door rails if the bead was made to look as if you had just run an ornamental mould into the rear face.

Oak framed, ledged and braced door construction

I suggest you run two grooves across the inside face of the centre and bottom rails, site the screw heads in these grooves and then cover them with a decorative bead tapped in as a tight fit. I have used this method many times on the outer strings of open tread stairs, in that instance two...

    Spindle Moulder With Tilting Arbor

The remark about fouling the power feed can equally be made about the standard non tilting machine if you are not using due care. I can see that the power feed may be more difficult to bring to bear on the workpiece particularly on smaller sections. The main advantage must be the ability to...
