    Scary moment, router cutter snaps

As I mentioned earlier the smaller cutters seem to be weakest at the point where the TCT tips are brazed to the base material as shown in the above photo. Solid carbide is much better.

    Scary moment, router cutter snaps

For 6mm grooves I have found that solid carbide single flute cutters are less likely to break in use. The type which have two carbide edges brazed into then are very prone to breakage so I never touch them. The single drawback to the solid carbide apart from only one cutting edge is that they...

    School Wokshops

I'm sure that you are not alone in your concerns about the current fashion for running down and closing traditional style workshops in schools. Wood and metalwork seem to be beyond the skill sets in many schools and are being replaced by textile and cookery lessons together with a much higher...

    gluing - cold weather

Cascamite powdered resin, the cold slows down the setting but it gets there overnight. I've never used it at minus 10 though!

    ledge and braced door

Not a good idea to glue the boards together for the reasons already given, it is a good idea though to ensure that the tongues and grooves and all surfaces like the back faces of the ledges and other areas which can't be coated after assembly are given a coating before making up the door.

    100mm extraction ducting

I recommend that you use metal ducting rather than plastic, there is less risk of static build up and it's fire resistant. My own system works well and is assembled as follows. It's a conventional 1.5 HP machine with filter bag on top and plastic chipping bag below, the whole being sited in a...

    Box shifters

Machine Mart treated me like rubbish when an item failed at first use. It only happened once because I have never returned to give them a second chance.

    Which diamond stones?

I bought a set of three, course med and fine 150mm X 50mm for £14 including postage from eBay I use them for router cutter sharpening and honing the under and over planer blades in the block. They are about three years old now and still working well. They have the name Neilson on the wrappers. Mike.

    Moss

Not a problem you should advertise, we had a rash of fly by night firms claiming that the moss on the roof would destroy the tiles and that the answer was to pay them slabs of cash to power wash and paint with a "special paint". Regetably quite a few elderly people were taken in and paid...

Show us your sharpening stone boxes.

Having thrown in my photo I would be interested to know why you have chosen to bed your stone into the box with caulk. I have never seen this done other than in the instance of pieces of natural stone flattened only on one face and set into a box using a cement mortar to hold the rough face. Mike.

Show us your sharpening stone boxes.

I'll risk sending everyone to sleep, on the left and oak box containing a norton india medium, on the right a non specific brown hardwood one containing what i think may be an arkansas. Its very hard and fine and was given to me as am apprentice with the information that it was very old and had...

    major relandscaping job.

Hi Roger If you would like to see a photo of the chains used as a water duct there is a good picture on the the RIBAJ site. Just google the Olivetti building in Derby. The building was considered to be iconic in the sixties and has recently been refurbed. Sorry but I don't have the talent to...

    Water marks in oak

It may be possible to bleach the oak back to an acceptable colour using a solution of oxalic acid crystals. This needs to be done with due care since the acid is toxic. You can find information on the safe handing and use on - WWWconstructionchemicals.co.uk

    Multico TM3 SET Various Roles?

I think you are right it's a typo for cill. The statement is true though, in all good quality external joinery there are no level flat surfaces on which water can stand and eventually soak in. 9 degrees of slope is considered the minimum needed to shed water.

    Multico TM3 SET Various Roles?

The TCT inserts for the blocks Are not sharpened but replaced as required. Each blade has two cutting edges to allow them to be reversed. New blades are about £1.50 / £2.00 each in boxes of Ten

    Multico TM3 SET Various Roles?

The different angles are normally on the inside edges doors, windows etc and give different appearances just as the ovolo mould does if that is what you prefer. My preference for heads that move individually is just a personal preference, my learning was done on the conventional machines which...

    Multico TM3 SET Various Roles?

Mine is the best piece of kit Ihave ever bought, I have 9,12,and 20 degree scribe cutters and matching spindle moulder cutters to run with a 125mm rebate block. The machine stops within 10 seconds so hasn't got electronic braking. I much prefer the indipendant movement of the heads rather than...

    Garden waterwheel

Hi Coley I'm sure you are right about the cost of the bearings, the problem of this type of job is that it consumes mega man hours! My next a mill house is waiting for a few bits from my sons laser cutter and delivery of others from Amazon, enthusiasm is a bit slow as well. Mike.
