    King posts, tension or compression

I have never even heard of a crown post truss but I am familiar with the King post and queen post truss. The queen post truss being used over greater spans and giving a usable space between the two queen posts. I suggest that you get hold of a copy of Riley's Manual of carpentry and Joinery or R...

    Registered Design?

I don't think that the cost of registering the design is the problem, it's the costs involved in trying to defend your rights in court. Any turning tool has a limited market, if some large and wealth concern on the other side of the world chooses to steal the design and market the tool can...

    Flush front door plans?

Before expending all that time and energy it may be a good idea to have a look at external quality fire door blanks and see if one of those will serve.

Why do I keep doing this to myself....

It would help if you ensured that the skirting boards you buy are machined with the heart side on the outer face. They will always dry out somewhat after installation in a modern heated property, this will tend to make the curve slightly away from the heart side, think of it as the growth rings...

    Setting a planer thicknesser

I think that your machine is fitted with reversible blades that are replaced rather than sharpened as with conventional machines fitted with HSS blades. With conventional machine it's possible to hone a small secondary bevel on the front face of the blades and get a more pronounced scraping...

    Router for a beginner

For £248 you can have the dewalt 625E 2000 watts of power will cope with anything you are ever likely to do. Comes with half inch and quarter inch collets. I bought one about five years back to replace an Elu that had served for about 25 years. The dewalt is every bit as good.

    The future of wood

Current concerns about man made plastics persisting in the environment, being consumed by fish and other animals which form part of the food chain, may in time cause us to look more sensibly at the long term effects of using them. One sometimes overlooked advantage of all timbers is their...

What spindle moulder tooling should I buy

The cutters and limiters shown are reversible to give 9mm or 12mm rebates when running with the 125mm rebate block. Ive shown them upside down compared to mounted on the spindle since its easier to see how it works. The ones shown are 20 degrees but i have other sets at 12 and 9 degrees. If you...

    Toolbox suggestions?

Yes I had one many years ago for use on site (early sixties) easier to carry than a tool case and only used for first fixing type jobs and roofing work. A man who used one regularly was easily recognised by the fact that all the sharp corners of his tools had been rubbed off by them constantly...

What spindle moulder tooling should I buy

One advantage of alloy blocks is in reducing the weight of the rotating mass, this can be an advantage when mounting two blocks on the spindle to cut say a rebate and mould on a door or window in a single pass. There is also an advantage in buying a limiter cutter block from Whitehill for the...

    Toolbox suggestions?

There is a entry under "ToolChest" Datedq 15 October 2016 which has a couple of photos on y two part tool case which maybe of interest. Sorry I have no idea how to post a better reference to it. Mike.

    Hollow mortise chisel's

Most of mine are the Japanese single flute type and are not quite so expensive as the cabinet maker twin flute ones. Whichever type you chose it pays to ensure that augers are available as replacement items. Augers tend to fail in the smaller size chisels while there is still plenty of life left...

How do I downsize my workshop?

Just imagine having to pay others to do what you are fully capable of and you may be happy to keep the capability of the machine. It doesn't eat or drink and won't lose any value if you wait another year and see how you feel about it. I sold the van used to transport timber and finished items...

    Which random orbit sander?

One more vote for the Metabo 450 mine has worn out one set of brushes and is still going strong on the second set. The choice of two orbit sizes is much more useful than I thought.

Planer Jig For Window And Door Cill

With luck this is a pic of a jig i use to make beading with the thickness planer. it uses the same method that Steve outlined but is obviously smaller. I dont make windows any more so its larger brother has gone to the woodburner.

    Garage door insulation.

Compared to the original weight of the 3.5M wide door the insulation and ply didn't add very much. The Counterballance springs mean that the door can be operated manually if required but it's fitted with an electric operator which has so far lasted over thirty years in regular use.

    Garage door insulation.

I did mine like Hemsby with 25mm and then pop riveted a sheet of 4mm ply wall boarding to the inside face.

Thicknesser Issue With Elm - Wavy Surface

You say that the wavelength of the faults is about 50 mm, this would fit with a chipping or other item stuck to one of the table rollers and lifting the board a little at each revolution.

    Chip extractor duct - questions

It's a master stroke to put the extractor in a separate building and keep dust levels in the workspace down. Keeping the internal roughness of the ducting to a minimum is very important, the effects of turbulence are very marked. I feel that blast gates are essential for an efficient system as...

    Wobble saws

They are very handy for grooves of all sizes, as mentioned the base of the groove is not totally flat, but this is rarely a drawback. Breakout can be greatly reduced if you use a spelch board and ensure that the saw is sharp.
