    Peanut Connecting System

I've watched the video, it's just a method that has been around for centuries and called slot screwing. It has been used for such jobs as fixing architraves on oak door frames and other areas where concealed fixings are needed. The keyhole router cutters have been readily available for a long...

    Does anyone else dislike routers?

True, I had forgotten that. But as you say it was in a table, it seems to me that the router table converts the tool to a minature spindle moulder! Spindle moulders always were slightly intimidating ( in the days of the square cutter block very intimidating) to the untrained eye and had a...

    Does anyone else dislike routers?

As I have said above, I regard my dewalt 625 as a vital part of my business. It replaced an Elu which lasted for years and trenched many a stair string, I don't use the router in a table since I have a spindle moulder and can use what I consider the right tool for the job in hand. In real terms...

    Imperial Blade Bore Reducer Source

Your local sharpening service should be a good bet.

    Does anyone else dislike routers?

I agree that they are noisy and produce a mess and dust, but a good one is totally indispencible and a vital part of my tool kit. I first used one in 1966 when my boss bought an Italian made Centec one horsepower machine for £100. ( that was about eight weeks pay at the time) For anyone who had...

    Sash window

If you are using the scribing shown in illustration 740. Are you familiar with the use of a mitre guide block? I've shown the block on top of a square edge but you would be clamping it to the edge of the moulded bar. Using the block as a guide for the chisel will give a shaped edge for you to...

    Sash window

Not all the information in any book is totally reliable. Sash Windows have been around for hundreds of years and there are many small regional variations in methods of construction. Just out of interest does the book you refer to suggest the meeting rails should be made of hardwood like the...

    Sash window

It's a better job if the vertical bars are continuos since its normal to pull the top sash down by pulling down on the meeting rail. The tenons on the vertical bars should preferably be through tenons with wedges at the meeting rail for the same reason.

    Sash window

I think that might reduce the strength a little but I can't see any serious drawback. I think that 740 might be quickest if you use a mitre guide block with the chisel to get the scribe profile. Why not try a couple of test joints to see which is easiest?

    Sash window

If you look at the free on line copy of Riley's Manual of Carpentry and Joinery page 384 shows two methods, one of which is suited to hand work.

Router newbie - what power router do I need?

There is no question in my mind you should buy a substantial 2000 watt router which will do all you want and be an investment for future needs. Don't waste money on jigs and gadgets, make your own it's easy to do. You can pay up to £200 for a stair trenching jig or make your own in about 30...

Lack of Woodworking programs on TV

I have been asked if I watch The Repair Shop by a number of people who seem to enjoy it. I have watched and enjoyed a few, but it seems to be a case of showing a small segment on a craft, or several crafts, with emphasis on the history and ownership of the item. I think there would be interest...

Designing some side tables, out of comfort zone, input need please!

I have a couple of suggestions to make the process enjoyable and a learning experience. First thing would be to get hold of a piece of 6mm birch ply and set out the table in pencil on that, you will be able to see in full size the look of the item and alter it until satisfied. Sizes can also be...

    Thicknesser Bed Rollers

You already have the correct answer, make it a very fine hair and you will have no obvious snipe. If you don't like the results then they are easily adjustable. Really up market machines are often fitted with an adjuster for the table roll at the operator end of the machine so that the...

1930s fireplace timber, trying to match

While you are on the computer have a look at Wikapedia, you will find that there are more than 500 varieties of oak. After sixty years in the business I can recognise two with certainty - American red -it's rubbish for most uses, and American white - not nice to work but similar in appearance...

1930s fireplace timber, trying to match

You can fume with just a plastic bag to contain the item but I don't rate it as controllable for an exact match. If you need an exact side to side match I suggest making the item and then sending for a good French polisher. I've done this when extending an existing kitchen and had perfect results.

    Garden gate advice!

If they are made with through mortise and tenon joints with wedges and glued with epoxy glue that is fair comment.

I think you will find that public liability also covers product liability which is the only other cover I think is needed.

Ledge and Brace doors - where to start?

If your existing doors are standard 30mm thick items a ledged and braced door will not fit the frames without altering them. Boarding is normally 20/22mm thick. You should be able to find a plan on line. If you glue the boards together in one slab it will expand and contract with changing...

    Garden gate advice!

Nice looking gates. The bracing you show will be adequate if soundly fixed. Notching the ends into the rails is a good method. I'm assuming that you are bracing from the bottom rail on the hinge side up to the clapping side. Ready made gates are often supplied with the braces loose, it's not...
