    Energy Saving

If you have electric heating maybe, but gas is much cheaper....also bear in mind most lighting is near the ceiling and heat rises.

A 0.9L Thermos Ultimate costs £30 How many months of using it to save boiled water will it take to see £30 knocked off my electricity bill at today's prices? (I appreciate that will vary depending according to contract and the proportion of the daily standing charge within each contract, but a...

There will be a bigger differential when we get frosty weather.

    Energy Saving

Our gas combi is in the upstairs bathroom, we have quick hot water there but long run-off for the kitchen but as we have hard water, to minimise scale we use a jug filter to fill the kettle. We fill that jug from another jug which we use to collect the run off previously collected while waiting...

    Best angle grinder

Very happy with my cordless Makita for handy light work, especially in hard to get to places or up a ladder. I have a corded one for heavier work.

Not what you want to see!

Another vote for sycamore. Very prone to furniture beetle too.

    Do biscuits add strength? Solved!

How brittle? For what application? Are you over-engineering? Compared to what alternative joint? It takes quite a lot of force to snap a biscuit, but I agree, you shouldn't use them without considering the suitability; just think people sometimes under-estimate them. Compared to a small dowel...

    Do biscuits add strength? Solved!

There is something to be said for a short 'stub tenon' which a biscuit joint has similarities to because less shrinkage plays upon it, keeping the shoulder tightly shut. I too made a simple half-glazed softwood outer porch door for myself (North facing and under cover so well sheltered) with...

    Do biscuits add strength? Solved!

Sometimes it compensates, sometimes stronger (especially with opposing grain direction of plys), sometimes weaker. Situations vary as do the clamping application and adhesive used and the open-times, and whether or not there will be exposure to outdoor weather (not recommended for beechwood...

    Do biscuits add strength? Solved!

Me too. Like me I am sure you only use well-seasoned timber. You can't really prevent a mitre-joint from opening if the wood needs to shrink, but if the glue to the biscuit is really good, it is possible to split the wood instead. When biscuit jointing thin timber or mdf I clamp over the biscuit...

    Do biscuits add strength? Solved!

Another typical use of a biscuit will be to transfer the load on a shelf to a side.

    Do biscuits add strength? Solved!

Not so great series of videos. I think some of the tests are unrealistic and cause 'followers' to misunderstand real-use structural situations and could make bad judgements in future as a result of that. There are details which make a difference, and I strongly disagree with end-grain jointing...

    BBC Scaremongering again

Much as I like the BBC, to trust 100% is a bit much. They are certainly not immune from bias, and like most of British Media, and culture, a bit too cosy to the US for my liking.

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

Pre 1995 Drawing board Pre 2002 approx Turbocad 2D Pre 2010 Turbocad 3D Pre 2011 Sketchup 8 (Google pre Trimble) 2012 to present FormZ pro which is a bit like sketchup without the need to make every object a group or component. Solids not surfaces. Wish I found it earlier but their marketing is...

    Hello from Alan in Aylesbury

Stigmorgan, I've been in the Aylesbury area only all my adult life, but it feels increasingly less like home as the countryside around it gets swallowed up by new housing intensively and HS2 barging through along the edge near our home, crossing the route to my workshop. Won't be retiring here.

    Hello from Alan in Aylesbury

Thanks, think I know vaguely why I had been banned, something to do with promotion, but from what I remember and it was a long time ago, had just been trying to be helpful.

    Sanding discs and saw blades

Sanding belts need to be good due to the joints so I don't skimp, Sia Blue-Line are very reliable. But Disks of any type give best performance by far in their first 5 minutes of use, so I find it most economical to buy cheap (Kingsplor) and replace often.

Screwfix Drill/Impact Driver Twin Pack Bargains - DeWalt vs Makita

Makitas are great. Used to use Hitachi. Hitachi chucks were generally awful for bit loosening, but Makitas hold well. Dewalt stuff generally good (apart from ill-fitting pozi 2 bits which wear quickly) but no experience with their drills. Makita is generally reliable, (the only bad Makita...

    Resaw oak on a bandsaw.

Grooving both edges first with circular saw or spindle moulder helps bandsaw follow the easier route.
