Brand new wood lathe shaped thing for under £60!

Have you seen the demo picture, looks both optimistic and dangerous. I would not expect that example was produced on that lathe. The tool rest is far too distant from the work for starters. Must be loads of vibration. Can't argue with the price though for a toy.

I hoped this day would never come - loosing my workshop.

I disagree with your minimum wage comment. (Edit: I think I misunderstood you johnnyb after quickly reading 'you would be crazy to do anything manual yourself as that's minimum wage work' as you really meant that's not how to make it big financially. End edit) My staff member is not on minimum...

Buying a machine on eBay sight unseen with pallet delivery

Agreed if they are not communicative. Good communication is essential and if the seller is not responding, you have reason for doubt.

Buying a machine on eBay sight unseen with pallet delivery

Hire a plant trailer or suitable vehicle, or someone you trust to collect who knows what to look for and pay cash on collection. That way, if it doesn't fit description, you can walk away. Only bid on reasonably local machinery.

    I'm a cyclist.

A work of art but I wouldn't risk my life on it.

Woodwork design software other than Sketchup ?

FormZ by autodessys. The pro version can produce csv cutlists from 'info management'. Many people haven't heard of it because the marketing for this gem is atrocious. Powerful and flexible, well suited for woodworking and much more besides. Like sketchup on steroids without the need to group or...

Can you recommend a decent hole saw kit

Any normal holesaw will overheat and lose its temper if the sawdust isn't cleared from the teeth. Unlike most other situations, the dust gets trapped having no means of escape, so compresses, therefore clearing regularly is the most effective and cooler procedure. As we use so many sizes we buy...

    Energy may go even higher

Surely it is simply that suppliers like Russia are able to name their price due to lack of competition at the moment, or even possibly a cartel? Plus the increasing demand for green energy, costs to increase those infrastructures, offsets to achieve carbon targets and so extra costs of the...

Riving knife alignment changes with blade height

On some saws riving knives need adjustment by a combination of slight bending and shimming with washers or card packing. A shame when new equipment isn't setup right from the factory.

    What plane to plane rosewood?

Only because it was readily available when clean water was more costly. Did you know that soldiers used urine to soften stiff boots?

    Repairs to butcher's block

The metal straps should be instead of long grain frame not as well as. So that natural expansion and contraction is possible.

Advantages of a Sliding table saw vs Standard Table saw

We still use a tracksaw for a quick angled cut despite having a slider.

Advantages of a Sliding table saw vs Standard Table saw

I only crosscut or cut panel material on mine, and for which the scorer blade keeps the underside cut good. Can't be faffed to keep changing the blade over so I use Sedgewick ripsaw for rip cuts.

Nearly put this in the joke thread

As over the years there has been a continuous increase of cars, vans and lorries, it is becoming harder and harder to safely be a cyclist or a pedestrian. There are far too many inconsiderate drivers, even at pedestrian (zebra) crossings. It is good that drivers are being forced by law to...

Which is a shame because it would be nice to use the more local product.

    Since when do we.....

As woodworkers, we would appreciate it more than most. 10 only divides once before turning into a fraction. Base 12 having factors of 2,3,4 and 6 (in base 12 there are direct relationships between more numbers) so would make woodwork so much better. I think this is why America stayed imperial...

    Sheet Material for cabinets

Egger has been significantly denser in my experience but we prefer Swiss Krono to either.

    Since when do we.....

I agree, going against convention is normally inconvenient and upsetting. If we had more standardisation, life would be both easier and more economical but it leans toward communism and can stifle inventiveness and artistic flair. The one convention I would love to leave behind is the metric...
