    Thickness planer

My P/T one is like the Titan one at screwfix.

    Thickness planer

It's scary on here. My machines will be called "rubbish" by many, but they have served me well and I hope will do so for quite a time yet. I do try to maintain things. I bought them to be useful as general purpose machines - I do not have the luxury of a well equipped speciality woodwork shop...

    Rounding off Plane Iron Corners

Make sure you only pull my left leg - the other one often has descending damp. Of course if the MDF is in winding I get my plane with 45 degree frog, a standard cap iron as it came from the boot fair with the plane, a 25 degree grinding angle and freehand sharpening on an oil stone with the...

    Holzmann HOB260NL P/T Issues

Regarding the three bolts you have added to keep the pedestal shaft more secure - may I suggest a brass cylinder perhaps 2mm mm long and a clearance in the thread between the bolt and the shaft to stop any scoring?

    Thickness planer

I have a cheap P/T, the cheapest I could get as, like you, I do not make money from my work - but I think I save a great deal. To begin with it worked really well, but over the 8 years it's been use I have had to keep it working well. The weakness is the fence - but I'm happy again after...

    Rounding off Plane Iron Corners

Tamusolin helps. I just hate it when I start sharpening ready for some serious planing of MDF and I have to go back indoors for one of my frequent calls of nature, it unsettles my line of thought about the current politically inspired economic problems.

    Rounding off Plane Iron Corners

Hey Pabs - do you wish you hadn't asked the question??? I see you have only been a member a month longer than me, but I've been on other forums and have learned a couple of things - first when you ask a sensible question expect many answers to be totally irrelevant. Second, given the least bit...

    Rounding off Plane Iron Corners

I love working with wood, I love the smell, the feel, the looks. I do not regard myself as a craftsman, only recently have circumstances allowed me to become more involved in making. Life took me in different direction - which led me to my love of learning and an ability to teach making sure the...

    Eh?!

I sell a couple of items on eBay every month. I have given up with DPD and Evri as both have been incredibly unreliable - and of course it's impossible to get any sense from them. Purchasers assume I have a secret way to contact these firms but I only have the same useless AI chat. I moved to...

What do you wear for restoring machines and tools?

That's what I do for my every day wear!

    Face Masks

I found the original article about the testing, so it seems the test did comply with US Occupational Safety testing. I fully agree that getting people to look so silly might be an issue - it's OK for me, retired and hiding away in my workshop, I do have the band handy, and wear it when I'm...

    Face Masks

Face masks and beards: I have emphysema, I knew for several years but would a GP listen?? Last year was not great for me, but eventually I got inhalers and they have got me back doing the things I love. I use a half face mask (not early enough in my life), but having a full beard they are...

Replacement Boilers & Building regs….Sneaky NASTY rule change?

I have been pondering on permanently on heating, but we are so tight on money I only turn it on for an hour if the indoor temperature feels particularly chilly (that's usually in the low 15s or under) then I set the temperature to the balmy 16.5C. I do have the water on constantly right now...

    Scotch Brite Grey

Many, Many years ago I had new UPVC windows, the installer used a green pad to remove the labels on the glass. I expect he was "told off" because the firm had to replace every pane!

Mould on wood after removing lacquer

Back to the drawing board! I sanded, went over with white vinegar (making sure I did this and have left the top indoors as my garage/workshop is rather humid). I had toyed with polyurethane varnish, I thought of lacquer ... then today I had a google to find a similar table, I thought it is old...

Mould on wood after removing lacquer

Looks like it is mould. I'm trying some "natural" ideas on a scrap of sapele, white vinegar, white vinegar with bicarbonate of soda added. As it's a solid top I can sand more off but want to make sure any spores are dead. This time I won't try to raise the grain with water - I understand white...

Mould on wood after removing lacquer

Thanks for your quick reply, I did wonder about metal first, I suppose I could try to scrape some off and test it. I don't want to use anything that will bleach the wood as it will not match the rest.

Mould on wood after removing lacquer

I have quite an old table - looks like the metal hinge part was made by a blacksmith (the top revolves and fold out to twice the size). As the top was in a very bad way - "distressing" is nothing to the condition of this I've sanded it to bare wood. After ages getting a good finish yesterday I...

How do you exchange the heat stored in a Sand Battery into a water heating system.

A rather impractical shape - but if the box were a cylinder instead the surface area would be a lot smaller, built underground at least the base could be hemispherical even if the top would be flat to allow the gubbins to be put in and maintained.
