why is hobby woodworking in decline?

Perhaps the reason there is a decline is that for a newcomer they will see all the tube junk about how to use new expensive tools and machines and think they have to buy them to be able to make things. Hobby woodworking is going down, or has gone down, the same consumerist path that other...

why is hobby woodworking in decline?

Woodwork should not have been removed but Incorporated into design and technology. I kept saying " what is the uniqueness of your subject" to the teachers (woodwork, metalwork, home economics teachers) I ran courses for when d&t was introduced because so many had the idea they were meant to be...

    Is it any wonder why.....

Terry asks "have public expectations changed which means that a return to earlier low levels of taxation is unachievable, and that taxes should be even higher" ... I certainly don't think expectations are higher, I remember a time when the police were visible on the streets - and kept control...

    Is it any wonder why.....

We can't expect quality services if we don't pay, whether it is the NHS, police or filling potholes in roads. The constant call for lower taxes seems to ignore the simple fact that they are what pays for our services, but of course those on high income may well use private medical insurance...

    How Much Does Woodworking Cost?

I continued in the family tradition of make do and mend - aged in my 70s I think I can count the number of times on my fingers the number of times I have had a car repaired for me, I can only remember one time I have had a tradesman work on anything in my house and that was to fit a new boiler 4...

what type of saw or similar would be most suited for thin slots (photo holders)

Doubling up blades in a hacksaw is an old way to saw a slot for a screwdriver - but you'd need several blades to get the 3mm slot - and the pins of a hacksaw are angled so only one blade gets really tight. If you have a friendly butcher (there used to be butchers) they use blades that go into a...

    Oilstones advice

Promoted by this thread I decided to try out my Dad's stone. He managed to survive with a couple of videos and a few other tools. I used to go to his shed and wonder how he did anything with the chisels. Now I know why they were always blunt, I can't remember when I first saw the stone he had...

    Sjobergs Bench

I bought a German made thermometer for indoors - it has a humidity reading too and works well - except it has a warning light which can only be set to 55% 60% or 65% even set at 65% the light is hardly ever out where I live in the UK, when I lived in Austria it was hardly ever on. The...

    Table Saw Safety

I go along with Spectric, as you have others using the saw I assume this is a commercial concern, so every person who uses the saw must have been trained and I think tested to cope with the regulations, so their fingers should never be near the blade.

Cleaning Small Parts - machine restoration

Anybody know what this tool is?

The blades seem to be made to present different angles to the wood - so one of these could suit most of the people here :)
