Drilling through the axial centre of a one meter length of wood

Jacob, you have let oldies down. Get a metal rod, some heatproof gloves and a gas torch, heat the end of the rod red hot, push and twist into the wood until it is obviously not burning ,remove and repeat many, many, many times. I remember my Dad doing this for a table lamp, but of course that was...

    UK power sockets outside UK

I bought a house in France that had been "renovated" by an English chap as a holiday home. I did not notice his "friend - a qualified electrician" had put all UK sockets in. As I had been living in Austria that meant a change of plugs or all the sockets, I was on the way to moving back to the UK...

The Ghost of Over mantles Past

What about the claw marks? I had a house where one wall in the cellar had been built 3 ft in from the real outer wall, I decided not to investigate....

    Squirrels.

Peacocks. Now they ARE a pest. Some ***** decided to introduce a pair or two into their country estate 2 doors from me (it's under an acre) 20 years ago. For some strange reason he did not consider that they reproduce, nor that they fly, Unlike squirrels they make a horrendous noise, some claim...

    Teaching - Drilling

You have it right, use a spotter, drill horizontally, of prefer not using MDF as scrap, keeping the dust down is always a good idea, and invariable kids will blow it away then breath it in .

The Ghost of Over mantles Past

Seeing the architect's drawing I have the impression the builder made the bottom half and then someone said "could you just do a small alteration for me - like this?

Why am I crap at measuring?

I had a crazy moment of measuring the other day. Indoors measuring a small parcel for posting. Picked up a ruler and thought the measurement were way out. I don't know where we got it out why we have it but it is a left handed ruler, so the zero point is on the right.

OK...so where is the scam ?

Perhpas it's the scam so popular with Facebook. Agree the sale, then the buyer says they will pay cash, sending it by the courier who will take the goods when you are satisfied with the money. Then they say the courier firm want money for insurance of the cash, so the buyer will ask you to pay...

Passing Cyclists in UK with a car Genuine help question

I saw my footsteps in the snow a few years ago and I think I wobble more than most bikes! Lurching is a better description.

Refinishing a small side table top

It was fish eyes that made me try water based varnish over the sanding sealer so much easier to apply without bubbles or fish eyes. I didn't mention I stained the top like you I wanted to match the existing legs.

    Viceless workholding

I'm just thinking how fiddly it must be to work on very small items without a vice, working out and seeing up the gadgets. Often I don't use a vice but if you don't have one I'm sure you are missing out.

Passing Cyclists in UK with a car Genuine help question

Is there an assumption that pedestrians walk in a straight line and cyclists wobble about, or that cyclists fall off regularly?

    Found furniture fiend

Hi, that's all I can afford to do, currently I'm using the wood from an old wardrobe to make a bookcase. It was a poorly re-varnished one, presumably "upcycled" then when I started on it I realised that under the horrid finish it is tulipwood, so changed my plans as I was going to stain the...

Refinishing a small side table top

I've just had one to do, cleaned, light sanding, oil based polyurethane. Then I did it a way that worked. Took off the patchy varnish I'd put on, cleaned and a light sanding, then wiped on shellac sanding sealer, a very light wire wool and finished with water based polyurethane. Good finish and...

    "carving" chisels

As they were on Facebook expect to see them again when the buyer realises he/she can't easily cut a mortice with them, that's if the buyer turns up to collect them.
