Amazing what you see down country lanes

However, if you can get out the other end a big trailer is no problem at all. I once took an 11 metre (what's that, 36 feet?) glider trailer through Devon lanes, and everyone backed up to a passing place for me. I might have destroyed a hedge or two, but otherwise it was problem free :)

    Fish Eyes

Usually contamination of some kind. Oil or grease in your spraying kit sounds most likely. Surface contamination keeps the fish eyes where the contamination is, not all over. A good clean up and try again?

    Cupping wood

Up to a point ... depends how thick the substrate is. If you're inlaying into a 20mm substrate you should be fine. Into 10mm, leaving only 3mm below, I think it might distort. If you look at the end grain, glue down the inlay so it would cup upwards. The other way round, the edges might lift...

    Any riveting tips?

Are pop rivets strong enough for this use? The A above middle C vibrates 440 time per second when played, and the air is forced through a tiny opening just about the size of the reed, so there's a fair amount of force involved. Accordions are loud! Pop rivets are soft compared to brass or...

    Any riveting tips?

Pop rivets wouldn't do for accordion reeds. Too wide, and I suspect too soft to hold them firmly enough. I only know accordions as a very occasional (and very bad) player, but I think you have one advantage in that the rivets are hidden. So you can concentrate on a good connection, rather than...

    Any riveting tips?

Just checking you're not building an actual aircraft! If so, I'm guessing it must be under the LAA self-building rules, in which case your riveting needs to satisfy your inspector, so her or she is the one who you should be asking.

    Safety files?

I've made safe edge triangular files for luthiery by grinding the teeth off the edges. Grinding the two main faces flat would be harder work though.

    why?

I suspect part of the reason is to distinguish the profession of surgery from its predecessors. Apparently the earliest surgeons trained as barbers, and of course they had the sharp implements necessary to cut people open, remove limbs, and so on. This was a painful and bloody business with...

A project with wood log slices... Some questions.

As you are new to this, and to save you asking, there is no known way to prevent the cracking and wood movement! Well, maybe (just maybe) if you encase the wood slice in thick resin. Bear in mind also that, even when your slices have dried as much as they are going too, they will still react to...

    Staining Mahogany black/white...

You can't stain wood white! Either you bleach it to a whitish brown, or apply white pigment (aka paint) to it to cover up its colour. Indian ink, or alcohol soluble black dye, can give a decent black.

    Everclear Alcohol UK Equivalent

If it's any help, I finish instruments in shellac using meths (Bird Brand) from the local hardware store. Leaves no greasy residue, and I can't detect any of the dye (the dye fades to clear with light over time in any event). I've read that isopropyl alcohol works and is obtainable without...

Serious help needed from any guitarist

Have a lot of fun! Off the top of my head, Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms is in G, same three chords. There are better versions than mine, but I enjoyed playing it.

Serious help needed from any guitarist

Yes, works left or right handed. The tunings I gave read from lowest note to highest. You normally string with the lowest string closest to your nose, holding the guitar in playing position. Note: the slots in your nut might match the thickness of the strings for right handed tuning, in which...

    Imperial Spanners and sockets

Assuming they are all hand tools ... Planes have some value, especially metal ones. Metal planes with wood infills might have more (or be junk). Wooden planes, not so much unless they are rare. Show us the planes for sure. Chisels are a few pounds each at a car boot unless very big and heavy...

Serious help needed from any guitarist

I don't know about the Chord Buddy, but similar devices I've seen still require pressing down. And none have ever worked well! Can you use one finger to hold down all the strings at a fret? If so, tune the guitar to an open chord, D G D G B D works using the existing strings. Your standard...

Refinishing a small side table top

Yes, any shellac based sanding sealer is basically just shellac and alcohol. Wipe on a few coats - tip, never go back, it dries to tacky in seconds. Catch any missed spots next time round.

Refinishing a small side table top

Pure shellac can look lovely, but a hot mug leaves an indelible mark and water damages it unless you wipe it off quite fast. If anything will stand on this table then Danish oil goes nicely over shellac. If it gets heavy use like in a kitchen then polyurethane varnish is tougher.

What to look for buying a used wooden plane?

As previously suggested, reject any which have cracked cheeks, or very wide mouths (unless you just want to use them to hog off big shavings, in which case a wide mouth is fine). The other thing to check is that the plane has a tapered iron which gets thicker as it approaches the cutting edge...

    Men Sheds!

My local Men's Shed (Stowmarket, Suffolk) is a lovely bunch. They are currently helping fit out the extra premises our local Arts operation has acquired, so we're getting bespoke fittings, some built-in seating, etc. All for the cost of materials, which is great because like all Arts enterprises...

    Zero stretch rope

At a guess, steel would break once every 6 flying days. Dynema might break once or twice a year. Total repair time about the same because Dynema doesn't tie itself around the winch!
