    No No's on projects

Anything not from a 'high end' named brand at Screwfix. Quality has gone to hell lately ESPECIALLY insert nuts or anything brass coloured ( powdered metal crap) wont even go into bloody 12mm pine without the heads shearing off... 5 from 26 and a right bustard to get back out

    Electric advice urgently required

HI Morrisminordriver, checking the switch is obviously the easiest thing to do but I notice what looks like a transformer at the top of the light bar holding the pendants. depending on the quality (b & q's are rubbish), i'd suspect that transformer and if blown can be bypassed with a 3rd party...

Table saws, full sheets & wide pieces

could you not build a frame with folding legs that would store against a wall (or multiple sections). Top and bottom of the frame would have an inset t-track for a moveable stop and something like skate wheels rails across the middle for the board. something like: 5m Long Roller Track Flow Rail...

    Laser printer recommendations

after servicing many, many printers I was exactly like you, once I changed from inkjet to lazer a looooong time ago, I would never go back. I went from various b&w to a colour Samsung 415N and it has been excellent and reliable since it came out. Easy to change and can bypass the chip by...

How do you know you're getting old...

When your spending money had proper silver in it and being so very happy when your dad brought home a little packet from the pub as a treat that consisted of 2 cheese biscuits a bit of cheese and 2 silverskin pickles that cost 3p (I think)

How do you know you're getting old...

Routing thick end grain at the table

I'd go with a sander too. board with dowel set in from edge equal to radius of template. corresponding hole in template. put template on dowel and rotate against a sander. add extra holes for the dowel and an offset stop for a multi purpose jig.

How to benefit from smart meters?

I get where you're coming from but I respectfully disagree. Despite the companies insistence it's for the good of all it's all about maximising profits. Saving money and selling exported data. The grid already knows what a 'green period is', even the most uninformed person can take a...

How to benefit from smart meters?

Despite being pestered many times for a smart meter - shell even kindly made an appointment for an install that I never requested, which resulted in me using more fuel to go shopping :) I've resisted. I live alone and turn things on when I need them and off when I don't. I see absolutely no...

    Joke thread

Football isn't lowest score wins?? Well, you live and learn. So I guess they copied the scoring system from real games like rugby to make it interesting.

Dewalt rip fence out of alignment?

Agreed make sure the fence is locating properly. Also check the racks and pinnions for sheared teeth. If worn possibly a rack has jumped a tooth so wind all the way one way then the other and check they are fully parallel

    Making small circles

Wow people love to get complicated. whats up with 'compassing' your circles onto squares and cutting the corners off on a tangent (and again if necessary) then sand? Clamp some together with a small clamp and sand one side then the other to your lines . All same size and prob faster than a...

My concrete shed (workshop) base floods

How about a garage door sealing strip 'the wrong way round under the edge? Instead of the flat bit against your door you'd have it against the bearers, properly sealed under the strip and against your bearers hopefully would do the trick. https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/2255568440?iid=332458514794 I...

    Drill press return spring

I imagine that if someone bought a cheapy b & q tape measure and it went slack, they would probably decide to take it apart to see which bit of plastic had broken. He would probably be quite surprised to find out that all the cheapy steel had rusted right in the middle of the coil and the...

    Allen key upgrade?

Figured out the metal plate. In your pic looks upside down and facing the wrong way. It's for holding blades that have pins in them. The blade pins fit into the slot, the metal plate pushes down onto the top of the blade holding it in the slot as well as the clamp. Looks like for straight...

    Allen key upgrade?

You can get the screw a lot tighter with the leverage on an Allen key than you would with the knob you bought. Providing the knob slips in and out of the first part of the clamp (without you turning it) it may be ok if you can get it tight enough. Even then it might pop off if you turn it tight...

That looks great, well done. I learn too much on here about things to try - too much to actually try ;) Didn't fancy darker epoxy to contrast the rice more?

    Longer TS arbour possible?

Not a motor expert by any means but wouldn't you have to account for the extra pressure from pushing down throwing the balance out and extra resistance between the stator and rotor by making it do something it wasn't designed to do?
