    Odd chemical smell

Possible source, which I first learned about from a painter and decorator - the light pendant plastic can decay over time - you know when they go brittle - it gives off a word smell

Bad habits. I know I shouldn't, but I still do...

Touch testing the lacquer just a fraction before it's ready to be touched. Always 😡

How did you learn to turn?

I know what you mean. I haven't done much with it yet, but I found I had to fiddle a bit with the 'openness' of the cutter - i.e how far it is shielded. Also had to try different angles of approach until I occasionally hit the sweet spot.

How did you learn to turn?

Mark Sanger was an agent for Crown. See his videos here - I found them helpful. http://www.marksanger.co.uk/resourcepage.html He's a lovely guy. Sadly struck by MS, so not doing demo or tuition now. 😕

    Lathe Tool Storage Rack

Almost impossible to say. Some (coughs quietly), are tool collectors and end up with more than we need. Others are sensible and just buy a actually needed. It really depends if you find you like one type of turning, or want to try lots of different things - eg spindle, bowl, hollow form...

What wood is this and how best to finish

I've got one just like it. Teak oil every year or two, and if its got too shabby, I use a jet wash on it, let it dry, then apply the oil. Over 12 years old and going fine. I do cover it in winter, before big rain comes

    Kenwood Chef motor

Thanks, Alex. Maybe that's my starting point - the guys Pedronicus kindly found don't offer advice - just send parts. Hopefully I'll get there in the end 🤞

    Kenwood Chef motor

I don't know, no. But I've no knowledge of such things, so made a fatalistic assumption!

    Kenwood Chef motor

Thanks Geoff. I hope you find it, but don't get old trying - I just hate to chuck it out - many happy memories of the noisy beast in gran's (and mum's) kitchens
