    Wot Sandyn said, or just paper/ paint in as far as you can. Use a mini roller to paint in add far as poss, or use it to press down the paper, as will get in further than a papering brush.

    I would have guessed holly as the grain is so pale. But interestingly, I've just split some holly I was given, but it has the most amazing grain I've ever seen: (NOT trying to hijack your thread, just coincidence I got this holly yesterday)

    I haven't pressed them into briquets, but i put shavings into e.g. flour bags or sugar bags, twist the top closed and use them as fire starters - bulkier than your aim, but work well.     You could get a 5 inch faceplate ring to go on your chuck - if your chuck has the grub screw, problem solved.

    Cash and carry stores are quite popular - cost co, makro and so on. Trouble is, they add vat at the till, so hard to compare prices if you're a maths dullard like me, and now with e.g. Lidl and Aldi, stubs carefully price compared, and it's not worth driving to c and c, and sometimes even more...

    Forgot to say, when you drill the holes you decide on, vacuum pout any dust, or use a dust puffer, so no loose dust in there preventing good adhesion
