Do you process wood from the mill before storing it?

If it is kiln dried, do you really need to sticker it for storage? Assuming that it will be stored in a dry place, of course. If you know that you don't want sapwood and waney edges, then I would cut off this material if storage space is at a premium. As for any further processing, I'd keep it...

Aldi bandsaw - got a dodgy one or are they all poo?

Hmmm, realistically a bandsaw selling for less than 80 quid (probably manufactured for less than 20 quid) is going to be good for cutting cardboard and not much more!

My sanded brass inlays have turned white/silver

This is almost certainly the answer. At 600 grit there will still be significant scratches. The scratches will cause light to disperse somewhat randomly and this will cause the surface to look white. This is the same effect that causes the head/foam of beer to look white. Even with a very dark...

Not a Turner myself, so I can't comment on the item, but the material is ash. I have been slicing up some ash logs over the last couple of days and the bark and grain pattern are the same. Even the pink discolouration on the original log which I think is caused when the wood gets a bit too warm...

Tell me what your choice would be!

I use the Kreg KMS7101 Precision Miter Gauge on my Record Power 350 Sabre band saw. Not cheap but it does a good job and I like the quick select system for commonly used angles.

Here is my first attempt at an end-grain cutting board. I made this for a friend in the Netherlands. He loves cooking and he and his family invited me for meals many times when I lived there. The squares are sapele and cherry, the central cross is beech, the outer edge is made from a piece of...

Beautiful wood and excellent workmanship. I like the touch of using a two tone key for the mitred corners; I must remember that.

    Lets see your wood

Today I cut up a couple of eucalyptus logs that have been sitting around in the garden for a few months. I had painted the ends with some concrete sealer/primer (its what I had at the time!). It has largely stopped bad end splitting but there has been quite some discolouration which I assume is...

    Help identifying this wood, please

An interesting mix of spalting and burr. Doubtless you'd have to pay a pretty penny for that in a specialist timber merchant. A good find.

    How to clean thicknesser rollers?

You could use mineral spirits (aka white spirits, paintbrush cleaner) or if you want to try something less aggressive, you could try alcohol (ethanol). If I may suggest; don't use 18 year old single malt whiskey, partly because it won't work so well but also because you should be drinking it...

    Yep... drool, drool!

Very nice indeed. Well made and beautiful wood. But here's the thing; you used African blackwood for the dividers and then covered them (at least partially) with leather/suede (very nicely done, btw). I have some salvaged leather which I was intending to use in the same way that you have but I...

    Stupid accident

OMG... the very definition of a stupid accident. It makes me wonder how some people survive childhood. Just lucky, I guess. Long live the Darwin Award!

Interesting! Not nearly as expensive as I had imagined.

Do you have a self-made or commercial jig for milling timber? Those boards look very nice. For stuff that big I have to go to the Timber merchant!

Oh that is nice wood. If it's sound enough you could use it for making decorative boxes or even Coffee Table tops.

    Stupid accident

OMG... "accidents and how to avoid them" NOT a suitable discussion for a workshop?? I can only wonder at the intelligence of said "academic". And referring to not upsetting children in school..... Many years ago I taught Chemistry and I made damn sure the kids saw up-close images of damage to...

    Lets see your wood

In the words of the oft quoted Mr.Gump; "Life is like a box of chocolates..." and so is milling your own boards from logs! More wacky wood! This is from the unknown prunus species I showed earlier. This is about as big as I can handle comfortably; about 30 inches long by 10 or 11 inches...

    Stupid accident

One good thing out of this unfortunate incident. Now you have a good reason to replace the old tube lighting with LED strip lights. Safer and cheaper to run.

They do look remarkably alike. I think the bark is rather different; juniper appears to have a more flaky/peeling bark than yew.
