Startrite TA165 riving knife alignment (again-ish)

Thanks, my whole setup feels odd. Like I can’t see why it would need those big spacers past the knife? everything is imperial on mine, the measure and all the bolts I’ve played with so far. I’ve bought spares from Machinr Spares before and they didn’t turn out to be right (handles for the tilt...

Startrite TA165 riving knife alignment (again-ish)

Hello, Appreciate the post on the TA175 (Startrite TA175 riving knife alignment) and comments form @deema @Sideways @distinerior @BigPaul and others but I find myself in the same situation with a 165 and thought I'd start a new thread. Hope that's ok. I bought the said saw and have started...

    9" table saw blade

Popping this in in case others stumble across it in the future (and because I'm in the same boat). I'm really struggling finding (on paper) high quality 230mm blades. Axminster have 3 which suit what I'm after, a rip, a cross cut and a general purpose blade...

    Startrite TA165 Blades?

I thought the stock riving knife was 2.5mm (according to machinespares)... Mine has a homemade knife (not by me at 2.7mm ish). As I understand it, the knife should be thinner than the kerf but thicker than the blade itself, so 2.5mm would seem right for most google-able blades I can find...

    Startrite TA165 Tidy up - Part 2

Hi (again), I've got a fairly decent condition Startrite TA165 and want to do a sympathetic refurb - looking for some advice from this fine forum. I don't want to charge in so have a few questions that will hopefully avoid some mistakes. I thought I'd try and limit 1 question to 1 thread (hence...

    Adding locked switches to machinary

Thanks all, and thanks for narrowing down the type of isolator that would be appropriate. I agree that teaching kids about how to behalf is super important but it doesn’t hurt to put some physical obstacles in place! Next job to find a sparky that can actually find time for the job!

    Adding locked switches to machinary

Hello, I'm planning/building my first dedicated space as a workshop. I'm organising my thoughts around the electrics and lighting and will be hiring an electrician for advice and the work. However, in my experience though, I've had mixed advice when things are outside their usual day to day...

My concrete shed (workshop) base floods

Thanks all for the ideas. the base is about 100mm and the rebar presumably half way down, maybe a little lower. the contractor wasn’t very interested, I don’t think I’ll be able to convince them to come back. They did suggest removing some of the shuttering but I dont see how I’d be able to do...

My concrete shed (workshop) base floods

Hi All, I've finally got to building my dream workshop, a 6m x 4m log cabin (Dunster House). No more dragging my tools out of my tiny shed before I can even start a job. I had an over sized concrete based laid, so 1m to the side, another 1m at the rear (giving access to the surrounding fence)...

What is "pre-stain conditioner" called in the UK?

I spotted this “sanding sealer” Shellac Sanding Sealer | Rustins which says on the blurb is shellac and alcohol. It says it’s usually used to seal stain (which I assume means after staining). If I use this as describe about (shellac then sand) would I aim to sand it all back? Take of the smooth...

What is "pre-stain conditioner" called in the UK?

I’ve never used shellac or sanding sealer as I’m new to finishing, could you use just white spirit without sanding? I’m thinking if the US conditioner stuff is mostly spirits, what else is in it? If not, could you recommend a shellac or sanding sealer product (can’t find anything obvious). Thanks

    Bosch GMF-1600 Router

Any comments on the router? I'm after something with a fixed (for table mounting) and plunge base, and it keeps coming up. It's around £400 on Axminster but I've seen German retailer SVH24.de sell what seems to be the same thing (I want the full kit - and the German one even comes with a L-BOXX...

    Identifying Startrite saw bench

Hi All, New user here. Enthusiastic hobbiest, very much still learning. I have the chance to buy a Startrite tilt arbor saw but don’t know what model it is. It’s like the 725 but from what I can gather, they all look pretty similar from that era. I’m curious to know but also to get an idea of...
