Dowels for use with a jig

I've got a Joint Genie dowelling jig which seems a well-made tool. Having used it with a few projects now, I'm convinced that the dowels I'm using (the 8mm fluted beech ones from the likes of Screwfix, Toolstation etc) are causing me a lot of problems come assembly time. I've measured the dowels...

    Workshop heater to recommend ?

I heat my garage of comparable size with an 8kW unit, once up to temperature it maintains that easily mostly idling (these units have thermostatic control and switch between two output settings). The fumes are all vented through an exhaust which you stick outside. They are all 12v I think...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I know exactly how you feel Mike, I was thinking of posting a picture of my daughter's workbench I've just finished off for her gift today, took one look at recent stuff on here and thought better of it. I still have a long way to go. And you have nothing to be humble about, I think that's a...

    Workshop heater to recommend ?

Fit a caravan heater. These are ducted inlet and exhaust so combustion products don't enter your workshop environment - avoids the moisturise issue with combustion heaters. I wrote a review on mine a while ago, they're widely available on eBay and not expensive. Sent from my SM-N960F using...

    Re-coating Polyx oil worktop

Finally got around to trying this. Short answer is Polyx seems to be too impermeable to overlay a refurbishment coat on to. Tried roughening up the surface beforehand with scotchbrite to no avail, had to strip the residue with meths. Second attempt still left a residue. The next time it needs...

Advice on approach to take to this chunky bookcase/dresser.

I've not seen torsion boxes built with the internal ribs in only one axis, but my intuition tells me you're right in saying that the lengthwise ribs are the most important for your application. For the dimensions you're looking at, I would suggest in addition to a rib along the front and the...

Advice on approach to take to this chunky bookcase/dresser.

I've made a few torsion boxes, so speak from some experience. I think your design is way over-spec. The strength of a torsion box comes from the thickness of the overall structure, not the thickness of the materials used to make it. A bit of theory, if I may. The stiffness of a beam in bending...

    Lvlp sprayer

I presume your compressor is about 6-7CFM, I reckon you'd be fine with the gun I have. The Morrells paint is great, not had any wear and tear issues at all yet a year in. Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk

    Lvlp sprayer

I use an Iwata AZ3 gun, which is HVLP. I think the air demand is about 9CFM at 2bar. It gives a great finish - I've painted my kitchen with Morrell's water based lacquer and water based poly varnish. My compressor is a 3HP 14CFM, but it cycles relatively infrequently when I'm spraying - I would...

SEnsible / safe heating for workshop (aka the garage)

I like my caravan/boat oil fired heater which I've fitted in my garage workshop. The combustor draws from and exhausts to outside - no explosion or condensation issues. A "mini-split" type heat pump unit is the ultimate in my view (electric and about 3x as efficient as resistive heating) but not...

Suggestions for fixing mess-up with corner cabinet shelf

Thanks to all for the suggestions. In the end I went with my idea of shortening the front shelf hinge-arms - chopped them through the middle, ground about 6mm off and welded back together again. The shelves now swing open cleanly.

    Re-coating Polyx oil worktop

My kitchen worktops were finished with several coats of Osmo Polyx when they were installed just under a year ago. Inevitably, despite best efforts they are at the stage where some maintenance to the finish would be helpful (the odd scratch and minor blemish) - my theory being it's better to...

Hi, I'm interested in the BGM-100. I'm not too far from Worcester so could arrange to collect if convenient.

Suggestions for fixing mess-up with corner cabinet shelf

It's fouling on the door itself, not just the hinge. The top shelf has exactly the same problem (not in line with a hinge). Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk

Suggestions for fixing mess-up with corner cabinet shelf

See attached sketch for a layout in plan view (the arms are cranked rather than straight to allow them to support the shelf further out, but you get the idea). I've marked the offending area with red spray paint. I'm convinced the issue is I haven't allowed enough clearance for the shelf as the...

    general panel saw advice

Does that bow in the T-slot matter for your application? With a panel saw, I've never seen someone try to run a jig through the T-slot in the way you would with a traditional cabinet saw. Rather, you clamp a jig into the slot and then push it through on the sliding mechanism. So provided you...

Suggestions for fixing mess-up with corner cabinet shelf

Geoff - thanks for your reply, I missed it as I was writing my post at the same time as you. As you can see from the photos the door opens to the left and it's a right handed corner cabinet. The shelves are supported on two pivoting arms underneath, as the shelf is pulled out they rotate on...

Suggestions for fixing mess-up with corner cabinet shelf

Thanks both for your suggestions. Doug - I wasn't aware of that type of hinge, thanks for the pointer. Unfortunately in my case the door opening is restricted to 90 degrees as it's in a corner. The construction method is a little unusual I think - the corner cabinets use blind corner hinges...

Suggestions for fixing mess-up with corner cabinet shelf

This is a bit of an unusual query, but I'm racking my brains a bit and am hoping someone might be able to offer some guidance. I'm after a bit of advice on how to address an issue with a Kessebohmer Le Mans corner kitchen shelf, caused entirely by my own stupidity. When I designed the cabinet, I...
