    welding rods

I've used hard facing rods on agricultural equipment. If you're planning on using your plane irons to rip up mile after mile of abrasive soils then hard facing is the way to go. For intended use I would strongly suggest giving it a miss. Aside from issues with distortion, inclusions at the...

Backing pads for random orbit sander

Thanks for your responses. Tom, I guess those pad protectors are thinner and much firmer than the ones I have been using to date then? I'll give them a try and see if they improve the sanding performance. Cheers.

Record Power TS250-RS - assembly, set-up and review

Johnny - yes, I am still using this saw regularly and it continues to perform well. Regarding your issue of cutting alignment with the sliding beam, you should have a bolt sticking sideways out of the main frame of the side of the saw that points towards the sliding beam (one at each end of the...

Backing pads for random orbit sander

I recently bought a Metabo 150mm ROS and have been using Abranet discs. I am aware that because of the design of Abranet, the velcro on my sander's backing pad will wear out unless I use an interface pad - so I bought a pack from Axminster. However, these are quite thick and very soft. For...

    Forstner bit recommendations

I use the Hilka set that Screwfix sell, I've been very pleased with them.

    Shop electricity

An ELCB is an earth leakage current breaker - in addition to detecting over-current, it also measures when voltages are leaking to the conductive enclosures of devices. Old-hat technology, UK installations now use residual current devices (RCD's, or when combined with an over-current circuit...

Axminster Trade Series MJ12-1600 Panel Saw

Re extraction, I'm looking at getting one of these for my bigger tools. A lot of extraction for your money (3hp motor), I think chems amongst others uses one of these and I gather they perform well. http://www.costco.co.uk/view/product/uk ... 1.4/153402

    which is better

I like it a lot. For the size, it has great capacity with a full 4' travel on the sliding beam. The beam is what makes the saw stand out from the competition - if you are used to a good sliding table or do a lot of panel work and cutting of sheet goods, it's indispensible. Using a standard...

    which is better

The MJ12-1600 is hands down a better saw if you can accomodate it, it's a trade/industrial machine not one built for hobbyists. It has a bigger footprint though and won't be mobile around your workshop.

    Glue Brushes

For gluing flat accessible areas I find an old flexible kitchen spatula works very well, and really easy to clean. When getting inside joints etc small scraps work best for me.

    My new workshop

Very impressive Colin. Like you I would like to put a workshop within 1m of a boundary and I'm trying to work out whether a steel frame/fibre cement clad building is the way to go over masonry block construction. Whereabouts did you get the frame made, and for someone who is not in the industry...

    Williams British Hardwoods

I'll give them a try and report back then. Yes I used Yandles when I was in Somerset (and still will when I'm down visiting) but it appears a well stocked self-selection merchant is a rare thing.

    Williams British Hardwoods

Has anyone used the above? Their site is here: http://www.williamsbritishhardwoods.co.uk/. Having recently moved to Gloucestershire from Somerset, I'm trying to find a decent supplier of self-selection timber, so if anyone has other recommendations for the area I'd be grateful for them.

    Advice on buying chip/dust extractor

It's a high volume low pressure type extractor, so will do a good job on stationary machine tools with big extraction ports if the flow rate meets requirements and you don't need very fine dust filtration. Won't work with hand held power tools that have small extraction ports, you need a high...

SIP 01332 10 inch Professional Cast Iron Table Saw

The 01332 is quite a respected saw, it's essentially the same as the Axminster AW10BSB2 (£800 at Axminster). Off eBay - is that a new machine? If not then it's pricey, if it is new then £200 more than the bare saw from Axminster but depends if you get the extension tables or sliding table with it.

    Mobile machine bases

Thanks Andy, should be ok for my saw / router station then, I reckon maybe 250kg for the whole thing. I'm planning to put the base on adjustable feet and make lifting castor mechanisms from Bob (9fingers) plans, see here: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/custom-made-mobile-bases-t17861.html

    Mobile machine bases

Andersonec, what's the heaviest machine you have on those 3" Aldi castors? Load capacity isn't stated, although they look sturdy in the image.
