    Which Planer/Thicknesser - DeWalt 733S or Kity 1637?

Hi Bill, Welling is the same as it ever was, really. Not a bad place to live, but not a patch on the sea, the countryside, the open space, the better pace of life, the friendlier folk... 'scuse me if I sound envious. It's on account that I'm envious, you understand! We're lucky. A...

    nutool and performance power

My old electric planer packed up last year, and I had three doors to do in a hurry so I nipped to my local B&Q to see what they had, and came away with a Power Pro tool that cost £47. If nothing else, I thought it would get me out of trouble. It turned out to be a terrific piece of kit. Since...

    glue choose

They're almost exactly the same chemically, but Titebond isn't quite so diluted so it has a slightly better grab which is only really noticeable on heavier stock. I use Titebond because it's available in large sizes from Axminster (and probably others) and it works out a lot cheaper than the...

    Which Planer/Thicknesser - DeWalt 733S or Kity 1637?

Bilzee - Platypus suggested Stiles and Bates, and he's bang on the button. They do cater for woodturners, but their primary business is timber, and they have a superb selection of timbers, particularly some lovely English stuff - elm, sycamore, walnut - you name it. They're sort of half way...

    B & Q

I use an Axminster ADE1200 for my planer/thicknesser, jointer and router table, and a Trend T30 for my table saw (which is in the middle of the shop - I didn't want hoses all over the place because I can trip over shadows!). It works a treat, and the T30 is a brilliant bit of kit. Anyhow - the...

    Table or band saw?

Hi Chris, The hassunme really is fast - and it's accurate and so incredibly easy. If you're anything like me, you'll find that because you're not putting so much muscle into the job, there's less chance of straying off the line and losing square. I find that these days, I'm far more inclined to...

    Table or band saw?

Hi peeps, Having read the above with interest - I just thought I'd throw in my ten bob's worth - about Japanese saws. I bought one on the recommendation of a mate, and LOVED it. It cost the princely sum of £12 from Axminster, and it is so incredibly accurate and such a pleasure to use, my table...

    Axminster CT-344 portable thicknesser

On Sep 14, I explained that I had a 2nd hand thicknesser (looks just like an Axminister CT344 but doesn't say CT344 anywhere) and that I hadn't had a chance to use it yet due to a workshop build. Well it's built (more or less) and the first job was to plane up some sawn beech for my new bench...

    Clipart sites

Anything's possible, but if I was, I've forgotten what cereviza means! Is it something to do with enjoying oneself to the hilt, enjoying life etc? Or could it be that I am being far too cryptic for my own good? Pray tell! Steve

    Clipart sites

Hi Gill, Go to http://www.ask.co.uk and do a picture search for lions. You'll get loads of em! (BTW - shouldn't it be deim? - and what is cereviza?)

    Chainsaws

I think Steve's posting was bang on the button. It amazes me that whilst we have to suffer the mostly unwelcome interventions of nannyism in just about every walk of life, there's nothing at all to prevent anybody at all from buying a chainsaw. I'm not saying for a moment that we shouldn't be...

    Axminster CT-344 portable thicknesser

I've just got hold of one second-hand. It needs a little loving care to get it back up to scratch, and I haven't tried it yet (although I've seen it working of course). Any tips or hints? I'm building a new workshop at the moment and won't be able to get my hands on it for a few weeks. Any...

    Buying a Router

The router itself is a just a motor, albeit with various bits and pieces or varying quality/power depending on what you buy. The important part is the cutter. A Porter Cable with a crap cutter will be outperformed by a Power Devil with a Freud or good Trend cutter. Don't get too hung up on the...

    Drill/Driver

I saw a bloke who had four thousand and he was giving one away free to anyone who could answer the question ' what is two plus two'. Sorry - I can't remember his name, or where I saw him, but it was on the web...

So You Want To Be A Woodworker By Rick Fox

I thought that was brilliant Rick. It certainly raised a few smiles (even though I am of course a highly skilled artisan). Many thanks!

    Pine Dowels ?

I doubt very much that B&Q et al sell pine dowels, certainly not in the smaller gauges under 10 mm or so. Could be wrong, but I'd be very surprised. They are very difficult to get hold of.

    NuTools NPJ130 Planer thicknesser

Hi Weasel, I took a look at your review and your site - and your bridge - nice one! However - please dump or replace the background image. Those vertical lines are a real pain!

    Workshop Flooring

Hi Chris, I don't think the foam idea is a bad one, but personally, I'd keep it thin. You don't want to be bouncing round the workshop! The only trouble with the total wood floor approach is that the floor can act as a huge soundboard, which is another reason the insulation is so important. I...
