    Height adjustable workbench

Never mind the workbenches, that stop motion intro is very impressive.

    Height adjustable workbench

I deliberately built mine on the high side, then took about 3/4“ off each leg after using it a bit. It's perfect now.

    Machinery/ tool dilemma

I have a bandsaw and a mitre saw, but use hand planes for stock prep. It's not that bad, but it's slower than running it through a P/T. I don't miss not having a table saw, it's never been an issue. Anything big gets diced up with the track saw.

There's No Money In It Anymore.........

I found a piece of newspaper stuck to a floorboard with paint the other day. 1973. Been there a while!

    Marking and measuring...

Just to throw another tool into the mix - for measuring spaces in rooms (e.g. to fit things into alcoves) I have found my cheap laser measure hard to beat. It fits into gaps easily, has way better accuracy than my tape measure, and is much easier to use for long distances.

    Marking and measuring...

Precision is the correct name for that quantity. If you use non-standard terminology you're just going to confuse people.

    Marking and measuring...

I like this image to demonstrate it: Having both is nice, but precision is much more important for woodworking.

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I take the corners off rather than camber my smoothing plane blade. Also, surely one could use a cabinet scraper rather than having to sand?

Masks and Specs and Beards and Shopping

Have you tried putting a strip of surgical tape along the top edge of the mask to seal it to your face? Supposed to be very effective.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I too am not a fan. But this is why I made a test piece first. ;)

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I am planning to make a frame for my mother's birthday; she asked for a nice framed photo, so I thought I'd go with a hand made frame (in walnut) to boot. This is not that, this is a practice frame I made from some oak offcuts I had lying around. A useful learning process, I'm fairly happy, but...

    Joinery books

I was going to suggest Modern Practical Joinery by Ellis, but I'm not sure if its modern enough. Definitely covers windows and doors though.

    Has anyone ever considered Formaldehyde?

How much are you seeing? For comparison a pear has ~50 mg of formaldehyde.

Kitchen Knife Set - Recommendations Please?

I have a few Shun knives. Look nice, still damascus looking after about 10 years. They only get hand washed and I sharpen them up on diamond plates (the same ones I use for my tools). They seem to hold an edge just fine. I find the handle and blade shapes very comfortable - the 10" chef's knife...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I sharpen everything to 25°, not had any problems (my tools are all old O1 steel though.)

    Wood screws......

They are only used to give a traditional look since they are inferior to almost any other drive pattern (except maybe Philips. ;)).

    Wood screws......

I snapped a turbogold going into a softwood joist, they've mostly been fine though.

Are expensive tenon saws worth it?

I too thought it was an odd piece of advice. If your tenon saw is flexing then it's broken and will probably need replacing (or some serious work to repair).

Are expensive tenon saws worth it?

MY grumble with disposable saws is that if they're bad you can't really do anything but throw them away and buy another one and hope its better. I have a hardpoint panel saw I used for a bit of rough work, but it doesn't cut straight so it's essentially just junk.

Are expensive tenon saws worth it?

I bought a cheapy off the bay (about a tenner as I recall), seems fine to me - it cuts straight and feels nice in the hand. Needed a little clean up and a sharpen (it's really not that hard, just get a saw file and work methodically). So yes, I'd say old tools are worth looking at if you're...
