    Compressor Hose Advice

Hoses are quoted by bore, however they often have different fittings. For instance I have a 3/8" hose which has 1/4" bsp fittings. Most tools will have a 1/4" bsp screw thread on them, you would usually fit quick connects to everything though as threads need sealing up with tape or goop. Not...

Chisel sizes, what do you actually use??

I have an old b&q 18mm basher chisel, it has a steel end cap so is good for a bit of abuse.

Chisel sizes, what do you actually use??

I have that Narex set, I use all of them. Most used is the 20mm followed by 10/12mm I think, but there are times when having smaller are larger are handy. It probably depends on what you do with your chisels though.

    Compressor Hose Advice

I have a 10m rubber hose I got from screwfix, erbauer or something like that? It's not bad, fairly heavy but lies flat and doesn't try to spring into odd shapes.

How to correctly wire 2-way switch for ring main

You can't make the switch shown do what you want. To make a correct ring extension you would need to switch both lives and neutrals, but you're well short of both connections and the right changeover pattern for that. Your best bet is a separate ring for the extension, or failing that an...

What's the biggest mistake you have made in your woodworking

Most recently, measured twice, found a discrepancy, then proceeded to cut to the old line instead of the new. A real facepalm moment.

I hoped this day would never come - loosing my workshop.

They look more like office space than light manufacturing to me, definitely won't want someone blowing chemical smells over their nice macbook toting clients.

Longer open time than Everbuild 502

I have ordered some semforite, the polyvine cascamite I tried recently was gritty junk, let's hope this is better.

    Birch ply prices

Before covid I was paying about £50 a sheet for BB/BB, it's more than double that now.

    Birch ply prices

My local yard is £168 a sheet for 18mm furniture grade. Those are some keen prices!

Did you buy any cheap tools that surprised you with being actually good?

I have a similar Bahco 3/8" socket set and it's been bullet proof. It's been used for some fairly difficult bolts on the car to the extent of having a 2 foot bar slipped over the handle and then been kicked. It just keeps going.

Solar panels: do they save money?

My parents have PV panels without a FIT, they pay for all their electricity and gas with a slight surplus. Worth it given the cost of purchase? I'm not sure.

    Wood screws

Torx can strip pretty badly when the drivers wear. I did a lot of flooring using little tx10 screws and the drivers stripped a lot, at which point they strip the screw if you're not careful. Having a pozi cam out is possibly preferable.

    Finishing open grain/pore timber

Definitely. Shellac once dissolved lasts about a year at best.

    Wood screws

I use the cheap goldscrews from Screwfix, seem fine to me. They drive pretty well and are pozi which I like as that's my most used drive type. Phillips heads are the worst of all drive types.

    Dust extraction advice

I really like my AC400, it usually has a filler caked in spray dust but seems to do a belting job regardless.

    Chainsaw Guidance

Last stump I hacked up I used a mattock. It is the perfect tool for that sort of thing.

    Board for bench worktop

My workbench is laminated 3x2s as well; I ran a hand plane over it the other day as it had developed a bit of a crown (and was covered in paint and muck). It's nice to be able to do that and not care about the cheap wood you're bashing.

    What to do with apple?

Current pieces are pretty small, tool handle size really. But I have an apple tree in the garden that needs to come down soon, about 12" diameter trunk and 5m height so a fair amount of wood.

    Pure tree timber

Anyone used these? Based in Exeter. They have some nice looking oak both sides veneered birch ply but I can't see much about them online. Alternatively, anyone know a good place to get oak both sides 9mm ply?
