    Ironwood?

I absolutely agree. I think it was called ironwood because it is dense and heavy and no one knew what the hell it was. I also agree on it’s destiny. I don’t really need all of this. I might use some for a box or two. Chopping boards maybe? John

    Ironwood?

Ok, more pics of the wood in question. Some end grain and some closer from the side. My track saw had no problem cutting a chunk off the end to expose clean grain. No idea what the curved cavity is! Sorry about the photography, not my strong suit…like identifying wood! john

    Ironwood?

My Brother in Law is a jolly nice chap. He has recenly retired from the joinery trade and sold all his workshop equipment but has kept lots of interesting wood, some of which he gave to me this weekend. So now I have some maple, cherry and walnut to play with but also a Large plank of what Pete...

Hello from a very wet Somerset.

+Hi Mike, actually ‘mechanical engineer’ was stretching it, I am really a mining engineer from Camborne School of Mines! We moved to Cheddar from a much larger house and I had to build my workshop on the bit of the garden allocated to me so it’s too small (10m x 3m) to get everything I would...

Retrofitting a Hammer spiral cutter head

Just my own thoughts on this. I have had several machines with blades but now I have a helical cutter I would not willingly go back. I accept that blade changing and setting is now much easier but it’s not just that. The whole operation of the machine is smoother and quieter and the quality of...

Hello from a very wet Somerset.

Hi there, welcome to the group. I am in Cheddar. I am very similar to you, a converted mechanical engineer and it t,o until retirement for me to get, my. Workshop built and set up! I am really enjoying the transition to woodwork. It’s very challenging but rewarding and I can really see...

Triton TRA 001 Router conversion for permanent table fitting

Hi all, I thought I would share this for anyone else with the Triton router who wants to fit it in a table full time. I have had this machine for 5 years and I love it but it is a beast. Heavy and powerful but, for me much better suited to table use that as a handheld and indeed it has spent...

Routing thick end grain at the table

I have been pattern routing some curved staves recently from 18mm birch ply. They are about 300mm long and 25mm wide. I found no way to do this safely on my router table. I have compound spiral cutters etc but you can never predict when it will grab, and trust me grab it will, especially...

Green Ash planks - help please

Ah. Good point. I hadn’t thought of that. However, I am a bit stuck for options. I suppose I could store it carefully outside under a good cover? John

Green Ash planks - help please

Thanks guys, lots of good advice there. I only got it this morning. I will check it’s moisture level tomorrow. I am thinking of storing it in the loft and forgetting it for a while, absolutely no room in the workshop and I would prefer to keep it indoors.

Green Ash planks - help please

Hi all, I just had a great stroke of luck. The guy that sells me firewood and I got talking and I mentioned that I would really like some planks. He has been cutting up a lot of ash and today he brought these for me All about 50mm thick. I have read up quite a bit but I would welcome any advice...

Thanks guys. I am learning slowly!

    What is this wood?

Hi all, I know this is a bit basic but I am hopeless at identifying wood. I picked up this piece from a local wood recycling place. It looked really gritty but I put it through the planer thicknesser and I really like it. I think it’s tulip wood (poplar)? No idea what I will do with it yet! The...

    weird electricity consumption.

I agree with your final comment. Many of the meter fitters are not skilled in the sense of having a broad technical training. They do a short, job specific training course but have no in depth technical training. If things run outside the norm they are scuppered. The guy that fitted my SMETS2...
