    Applying stain to pine?

Pah! Pre-stain conditioner... rolls eyes and scoffs. All you need is a diluted (50/50) coat of Shellac Sanding Sealer applied over the whole piece. This will seal the bits that need it and do nothing on the bits that don't, giving a more even absorption of the stain when applied.

    Bit cross

I try not to rant on here, but this has got under my skin... Had an email this afternoon from someone who had bought some Ebonising Lacquer and he wasn't pleased with its performance. His 'complaint' was partly correct, he'd reached a wrong conclusion based on information supplied but we're all...

    Melamine lacquer finish

Careful Chas, I know how much you like your drink... Good advice given above apart from the initial stuff obviously given elsewhere that it's an easy finish. It is once you get used to it, but that does take a bit of doing. I always describe it at demos as a finnicky product to get on with. I...

    Chestnut buffing system

Just trying to catch up on this month's invoicing! There are far too many shows this month requiring time away from the office! Yep, we now have three different Dome Buff sizes in all three grades. The size of each buff, at the widest part, is: Small - 60mm Medium - 100mm Large - 150mm That's...

    Well done Axminster.........

It was a great couple of days, Axminster put on a great FREE show with loads to see and do, and from our point of view looked after the exhibitors well too, which is always appreciated. There are just a few pictures of the event on our Facebook page, I wanted to take more but I was just too...

I don't know if these tins state 'food safe' on them (and if they do check that they mean 'safe for food contact' and not merely 'food resistant') but the EN71 test is only for toy safety, it does not mean that the product is also safe for food use.

How old is he now? That probably answers your question :) Anyway, there are loads of finishes available that conform to the relevant test, EN71 part 3 which covers coatings for toys and nursery furniture. It's been covered many times before and as has been stated elsewhere (so I think I can...

Sanding sealer... A requirement or an option?

Nev is right, and the sealer also acts to bind the loose fibres of the wood together to give a better surface for finishing. The better the foundation, the better the end result will be - and that's not just for smoothness but also for better adhesion. This is especially relevant in the case of...

    Sanding sealers

A sanding sealer has many purposes; to fill the pores of the wood to stop a finish coat from soaking in, and to bind the fibres of the timber together prior to sanding to give the best possible surface for finishing among others There are thee main types: Cellulose - suitable for finishing...

How best to stain prior to shellac?

Can't fault any of Roger's comments, an alternative to the spray gun would be an aerosol sealer. Traditionally french polishers would have used an oil based (naphtha) stain and there would have been no problem, but these stains have very poor fade resistance and can take an age to dry. There...

Yes, it always seems strange to me that people want to put a finish on acrylic pens; it's already tougher than any polish is going to be!

    benefits of BLO

I'd go along with that. I have heard people recently telling me that they use our Burnishing Cream (other brands are available lol!) over CA to bring up the gloss; as this doesn't add a coating it will give a shine without affecting the durability. I haven't tried this myself yet, but a number...

My thanks to Walter for emailing me - I've replied here so you can get it straight from the horse's mouth as it were. It's quite acceptable to apply a shellac based product over a cellulose based product. This is commonly done when using Cellulose Sanding Sealer as a base for Friction Polish...

    Computer power supply issues?

Hi Phil I'll give that a go - I'm not in the office for a couple of days now but will have a go when I get back...and have caught up with everything else!

    Computer power supply issues?

Hi Folks Got a bit busy this afternoon and wasn't able to reply to each individual response, but thank you one and all. Other equipment works fine, but it's been suggested to me that a computer can be more fussy. There's plenty of ventilation and no magnets, but these have failed from the...
