    Boiler wiring?

did someone use the words 'commonsense' and 'Brussels' in the same post there??? Never thought I'd see the day...! (Checks again) Ah yes... there is a fairly large gap between the two words in the post... but not as much between the two words in the real world!

    Finishing

Hi Folks I missed this posting as I don't often look at this thread, I tend to hover around the Finishing section. Good advice from Graham on the products, although I'm not a huge fan of habitually thinning the Sanding Sealer 50/50 but I won't go into that one here! Another suggestion to get...

    Suitable finish...?

Hi Dave Several options spring to mind, obviously including a good quality varnish which I'm sure you've already thought of. Alternatives include Finishing/Danish Oil, applied as per instructions - usually apply, leave 10 minutes, wipe off the surplus, allow to dry for 4-6 hours, then repeat a...

    Scrolled Portrait

That comment just made me have to look at the Colron site... The very scant information they give on Danish Oil doesn't include the safety bit about disposing of used rags. This has already been done to death here but just in case... be careful! Used cloths should be either laid flat to dry or...

    Scrolled Portrait

Interesting comments! I've just double checked our label for Finishing Oil (our version of Danish Oil) and we suggest wiping the surplus oil off the surface after a couple of minutes. I rather thought the Rustins version suggested the same but I am willing to be corrected on that one!

Translucent finshes on a guitar (?terry...)

Hi Jim You should speak to Philly more about this one... he's good at removing finishes from guitars! (Sorry Philly!!!) You can apply a thin coat of sealer and then stain over it to limit the depth of penetration but I don't think that will help in this case; it's a good trick to avoid patchy...

    Rustins Rant

Hi All Philly, thanks for your glowing words, I hope we always deserve them! Interestingly, one of the most common questions/comments we get is about our lids (not sure what that says about the questions we get!) and the fact that they stick, as you might expect. A simple pair of grips is all...

black stain / finish for wood

At the risk of posting an unashamed plug (but I don't see I have much choice) can I suggest our Black Spirit Stain. Very black, will do what you want and should be compatible with your normal finishing method.

    Scrolled Portrait

Hi Gill I think some experimentation would be in order to make sure you get the finish you're looking for. I know from a previous posting that you use aerosols and this could work; I'd suggest building up in very thin coats (just a dusting really) to get the finish you want. Using this method...

Advice required: pine & painted image ...

Hi Lee and Gill I'd agree wholeheartedly with Gill's recommendation, I know of several people who use our Acrylic aerosol lacquers for this purpose with great success. Our Acrylics are very hardwearing and include UV filters which help protect whatever is under it, slowing down the fading process.

Yandles is there a meet up?

Hi Guys Just to let you know I'm in a different place from last time. You'll find me by the counter in the main shop (in the warm and dry!) next to the Record stuff. See you all over the weekend. Terry.

Yandles is there a meet up?

Hi Guys Computer problems and sheer volume of work have kept me away from the forums for a few days (and I'm aware that I have to answer a non-urgent question in another thread); preparing for two shows in two weeks is a real drain on time! Of course I'm happy for everyone to congregate around...

    Colouring a varnish slightly.

All of the above sounds fine to me, I can recommend our Spirit Stains as being suitable to add to traditional varnishes (and our Melamine Lacquer) to tint them. Our Spirit Stains are all mainly meths based and will mix in with these products perfectly. They are ready for use in this way and do...

    Unusual ebay item

Worth mentioning (in case you read the details before the FAQ bit was added) that the proceeds from this strange auction are going to charity, which takes it from dubious exploitation to bit of fun status methinks.

First For a WoodWorking Forum !

Have you any idea how much that would cost??? :o I think this is a fun idea and worth supporting, perhaps the best approach would be arrange a huge meet at one of the shows and a meal or some such afterwards. For one of the organisers to donate a stand they would expect it to be manned every...

    Paint/finishes on baby toys

Hi Folks Read this the other day and forgot to come back and post a reply, sorry! We can't really help with the coloured stuff I'm afraid, our Spirit Stains don't meet the requirements to be Child Safe; we're trying to reformulate but it is proving difficult to do so and retain the brightness...

boxing in wall mounted gas bolier?

As above... we're trying to get a new boiler fitted and have been told that some of them do require a certain amount of clearance around them as per the manufacturer's instructions. If this isn't given then the terms of any guarantee will be breached and the engineer can condemn it! Also, when...

    Coloured stains for wood?

Blimey, all these nice things being said about us! Thanks guys, yes, we supply a range of Spirit Stains; there are 21 colours in the range, 12 Wood Colours and 9 Rainbow Colours Plus, a collective term we use for Reds, Blues, Green etc. These are very vibrant colours and as Philly says they...

    Wax finishing.....stupid question coming up!

Hi All I agree with everything written above. Except in certain cases, stain is always applied to bare wood as it needs to be able to soak in; any coatings already applied will prevent this. Staining wood has at most a minimal affect on sealing the wood. Some waxes (ours included) can be...

    Scottish Woodwork Show

Hi Guys We'll be there, the first time we've been to this show, having managed to wangle an invite onto the Turners Retreat stand (thanks Bill!). Having said 'we' above, only one of us will be on the stand on the Saturday due to a date with some shops, some friends and some local bars! No...
