Cleaning worktops finished with Chestnut finishing oil

Scrit's advice sounds perfect to me, I don't think I can improve on it!

My first post.... A little help with some oak..

Hi Marky It's never easy to judge the colour of things on a computer screen, I know mine runs a little dark compared to others but there is such a variation that it's difficult to be accurate. Am I seeing this right that the top drawer front is darker than the lower one, and it the lower one...

    Melamine lacquer

A quick answer before I dash off to Alexandra Palace (with thanks to Philly for the endorsement!) The following applies to our lacquer, others will be similar: 1. I'm not sure what you mean by safe; probably the best I can offer here is that our Melamine Lacquer conforms to EN-71 and is safe...

Voice over Messenger help needed: RESULT; it works.

Hi Chas Not sure about the router side of things, but a couple of other things to check if you haven't already (and sorry if I'm stating the obvious...) Which version of Messenger are you running? I never had any success with voice conversations until the about six months ago when the system...

How do I spot sanding marks, before applying a finish?

Cellulose Thinners shouldn't cause a problem - once it has evaporated it has gone completely (assuming you're using a quality thinner) and shouldn't raise the grain or have any adverse effect on the wood This is theoretical of course and not something I've tried but it makes sense to me...

    Help, what finish

I think I'd go for a Finishing Oil or similar, for the ease of application and the water resistance for the odd splash that might find its way onto the cabinet. Melamine Lacquer (or similar) would be another option but this is a bit harder to apply over a large area - not to say that it can't...

How do I spot sanding marks, before applying a finish?

Hi Neil I wonder if wiping the surface with Cellulose Thinners might show up any marks? This will also have the advantage of drying quickly and evaporating away to virtually nothing ready for any anything you want to put over the top. White Spirit will have the same effect but would be slower...

woodworking show Alexandra Palace IS ON

Looks like Andrew made his posting while I was typing mine! An interesting list of exhibitors... I wonder how many of them have actually paid for their stand yet... Modedit: Newbie_Neil Please see post by Ben Wright.

woodworking show Alexandra Palace IS ON

Hmmm... will it won't it! Highbury Nexus (or whatever they're called these days) went bust at the end of last week with some rather large debts according the figures on their website (about £30m high enough for you?) The 'Specialist' arm of the company has been bought by a company called...

    Oil on spirit dye

Hi Newt The thing here is that the Colron Spirit Dye is, as far as I know, white spirit based which means that the solvent in the oil is likely to reactivate it and disturb it, usually ending up in a patchy effect. It's also worth mentioning that (again as far as I know, things may have...

    You've Got Mail?

You're right Roger... I've just been inundated with emails!

    You've Got Mail?

Hi In case anyone is interested, our website is now up and running again. Email too, although I'm not sure that anything sent in the last couple of days will get through.

    You've Got Mail?

Hi Gary Yep, I know the site is still down and my email isn't working either. I'm in touch with the people hosting the site and email server and they are working on it. There seems to be a major problem somewhere but hopefully it will be fixed soon. Meanwhile, feel free to ask me about the...

    Rutlands

Hi Simon Not sure if they'll be able to help you, but the folk at http://www.drechselstube.de are very helpful and nice people too. Might be worth at least getting in touch with. Martin there speaks pretty good English (which is great because I can't speak German!) and has a wonderful set up...

    You've Got Mail?

Nothing's working here Gary! Think I'll go pack up for the day! Seriously though, thanks for pointing that out, hopefully it's being sorted out.

    You've Got Mail?

Andy is of course right, although I have this option switched off as the envelope thing seems unable to differentiate between junk mail and stuff I want, even though the program can differentiate and puts the rubbish in the junk mail folder (unless of course there's a further setting I'm...

    Rockin. round the workshop

Hi Rich Thanks for those instructions, I already use Audacity but hadn't investigated it so this was really interesting and you're right, it is a whole lot easier that it sounds. I guess the problem is that what takes a couple of mouse clicks to do can take a couple of lines to write about...

    Oops - knotting solution...

To clarify the above point, which is quite correct, for 'alcohol' read 'methylated spirit' (or you could use our Spirit Thinners but that's an expensive way of doing a simple job!) Only thing to bear in mind is the effect this might have on the stain you have applied. This will depend largely...

    12 volt 20 watt bulb

Might be a useless suggestion... but have you tried a car accessory shop, being 12v? I'm not sure if many cars use an SES type fitting, but it might be worth a try?
