    Drilling dog holes (by hand?)

Yeah thanks for the tip, it worked well! I don't have a router (working with hand tools for the most part as I'm just in the spare room of our flat) but think it would work well. Given I don't have one I have indeed just broken the edge with some sandpaper

    Drilling dog holes (by hand?)

Vise is the large German made one from dieter Schmidt fine tools. Vs workmate it's early days (drilled dog holes today and haven't fully finished yet) but... + Work holding is much much better, I hate clamping with the workmate + The back extends out on rails (it's a Pask Makes design) which...

    Drilling dog holes (by hand?)

Its the large German made one (no more specifics than that) from dieter Schmidt fine tools. Is probably overkill size wise and a bit extravagant but it feels rock solid! Very little racking and has a really corse thread so moves very quickly which is useful when it's not quick release

    Drilling dog holes (by hand?)

Update: unable to quickly source a brace and bit and with workshop heaven for the Star M bit closed up until the new year, I thought id try a woodbeaver 19mm auger bit and used it today. I have to say I was blown away by how good it was! The holes aren't quite as clean as a Forstner bit, nor...

    Found Brace + Auger bits

I suspect most don't lol! I think you can still use them to be accurate by going slow in the absence of a pillar drill or drill guide and you can drill angles more easily so I've used them for Windsor chair legs before.

    Found Brace + Auger bits

Hi, I'm looking for a brace (10-12"), a set of auger bits and an auger bit file. I'm keen to learn to sharpen but really I'm posting here rather than looking at eBay as I'd like something that's in good shape already. On the other hand if anybody spots something that looks good on eBay or know...

    Drilling dog holes (by hand?)

Thanks for the comments. That star M bit from WH looks like it could be a good option. Sounds like there is general approval for the bit and brace route as well. I might post a wanted ad here and see if somebody has a set of auger bits... I slightly worry about getting something like that off...

@Hickorystick how much are you looking for the dust extractor?

    Drilling dog holes (by hand?)

I'm most of the way through building a small workbench for (mostly) hand tool projects in our spare room. One of the last items is drilling a bunch of dog holes. I don't have the right drills for this so need to get something and am looking for some advice: 1) buy a brace and auger bits - I...

    Nakashima style coffee tables

My last project was a Nakashima style table also, in my case one of the symmetrical designs using London Plane. I used threaded inserts and slotted holes on the supports, I don't think this is how they were originally done but it seems to work.

how to build a shooting board and what plane to use?

@custard if working hand tools only(ish) is there an alternative to a shooting board? I've made one recently and I love it. Its also just great as a planing stop and bench hook in a pinch

    Best jack plane

I agree with you on Rob Cosman btw, he'll have you convinced that to cut a half blind you need his $$$ dovetail saw, his $$$ marking knife with matching kerf and his $$$ kerf extender tool! Can't argue with how nice some of the stuff he makes is though

    Best jack plane

@D_W which wooden plane(s) would you recommend to a noobie? I have no idea how to shop for them (with no helpful Stanley numbers etc)

    Best jack plane

Thanks for all the replies! super helpful. My current project (and probably next) is using PAR hardwood so I'm going to steer away from the LA and get a bedrock style jack. I don't possess the eye of a used-tool connoisseur so I think I'll buy new from one of the previously mentioned trusted...

    Best jack plane

The quangsheng is an interesting shout... Has anybody got hand on experience? The only thing I've ever heard was a guy I met had bought one and found it to be off square but the reviews on workshop heaven (the ones the post at least) are glowing

    Best jack plane

@thetyreman the 5 I have is was a cheapo old one and it's really not in great shape! The sole isn't square to sides so it's hard work to get it set properly on a shooting board and I suspect it has a slight twist... So basically I have a block plane that's good and need an all rounder. @Peter...

    Best jack plane

Hi all, I'm building up a hand tool kit as I'm stuck in a flat with no space / apatite for the mess and noise that comes with power tools. I only have a block plane (a nice one) and a very not nice (not very flat or square) number 5. I want to get a serious plane that I can depend on for 90% of...

    Axminster front vices

Yeah I'm pretty sure they're York vises (and are sold under more banners also). I think if you ever see 'Made in Europe' (rather than Germany or something) or 'Made in Czech' then its York. I've just bought the german made one from Dieter Schmidt fine tools and whilst I dont have the York...

Wanted - Festool CTL midi, CT 15, or similar vac

Yep I've got one eye on deals tomorrow and have observed the same on eBay! I suppose it's good to know that if you don't get on with it you can make lots of money back

Wanted - Festool CTL midi, CT 15, or similar vac

Hi, on the recommendation of folks in the forum, I'm looking for a refined dust collector / shop vac for my spare bedroom workshop (one that doesn't spew out a bunch of fine dust everywhere). The Festools come very highly recommended and are top of my list, but would consider something else. Thanks!
