    Withdrawn Number of wooden planes

@B3nder apologies but I'm going to withdraw from this one, I just don't think I'd end up using it. Open then for another lucky forum member!

Help me out of this situation! Broken insert

They were indeed! I looked at the site again today expecting to see loads of negative reviews but it's showing as almost 5* and lots of glowing reviews. I wonder if they're a bit selective

Help me out of this situation! Broken insert

Thanks for the quick suggestions! (Love this forum!) @porker the drill-dowel-re drill idea is great! I will certainly keep that one in my back pocket. I don't have any of the mentioned kit but I think I'll invest in a screw remover as it's not the first time. I thought I was onto a winner for...

Help me out of this situation! Broken insert

I was putting in a threaded insert (Allen key type) and the top split, my pilot was probably too small. I tried cutting an opposing slot and using a screwdriver but the thing appears to be made of cheese and so just breaks more when you try to turn it. I need a hole where this is so have to...

    Beech kitchen worktop

I recently did the same. Used a bahco scraper instead of sanding which worked well and left a good finish, then used osmo. I was going to buy top oil but was told by woodfinishesdirect it's the same as polyx which I had loads of so just used polyx. So far so good

    Wanted Veritas skew rabbet plane

This one is going for £200 buy it now but it's in bad shape. The guy has a whole collection of rusty LN and Veritas planes and I can't believe the price they're going for, but as you say, with none in stock anywhere I guess some people are willing to pay! You could take a punt that it's just...

    Starting out with rough sawn

If you're open to do more with hand tools and just want the power tools to speed things up / remove the worst tasks another school of thought would be to: - Get a band saw for long rip cuts (plus more versatile as it can do curves etc.) - Get a good thicknesser. Planing one side by hand isn't...

Beech Kitchen worktop as workbench top?

If you're looking to minimise work and material cost it might be worth looking at Nicholson style workbenches. Chris Schwartz features them in his workbench book and I think the lost art press version (the anarchists workbench) might also have it and can be found online as a free pdf. It's...

Beech Kitchen worktop as workbench top?

I started a similar thread a couple of months back. Lots of useful responses: Buying solid countertops for raw material In summary yes it'll work. If you can get offcuts cheap or free all the better. Issues are it'll look like a kitchen worktop (not so bad) and grain direction will be all over...

    Tool chest hardware supplier

That would be epic! I've googled London blacksmiths and not found but much I might try a bit harder given this idea

    Tool chest hardware supplier

Yep I'll post progress once things heat up a little! I'm intrigued how it's going to turn out as I'm going a bit off the standard dimensions. Thanks all for the links, a few I hadn't seen before and some good looking options!

    Tool chest hardware supplier

I'm building a Dutch tool chest and need hardware for it. Looking for strap hinges, a hasp and some lifts. I saw a 2015 thread on the same topic but the limited suggestions don't seem to exist these days. The ones in this post look great but the guy made them himself! Traveling Dutch Tool Chest...

    Bringing goods from the EU

Apologies, I'm sure this is somewhere in the thread but I couldn't see it in the pages I scanned. I just ordered some nails and a dovetail saw from Dictum, I was not charged VAT. Have I walked into a bit of a trap here? is there going to be a massive faff to get the parcel and extra cost (above...

    Peter Sefton Long Courses

+1, would be great to get some thoughts on the various short courses which are much more feasible time and money-wise!

Low angle, bevel up jack plane

Caveat that I only have standard angle bench planes... but a major selling point of a low angle jack is sold as better performance in end grain where the lower angle helps slice the fibres. If you have the 12 degree bed angle + 25 degree primary bevel, then + 5 degrees for a secondary bevel and...
