    buying hand planes

If I were starting from no planes I'd buy these three on day 1 which will do everything then buy more as I fancy it. 1) Super cheap and nasty #5 with cambered iron for rough stock removal 2) Nice 5 1/2 with straight iron for almost everything else 3) low angle block plane for misc little jobs...

    buying hand planes

I can't see any mention of tooltique in there so I thought I'd throw it in. Used tool site that refurbishes all the tools before selling including grinding flat to a very small tolerance. Their planes come in a fair bit more than on eBay but a hell of a lot less than buying a premium brand and...

    Portable (bench-top) Workbench

I just went with an oil as I know it'll take a beating (doesn't looks quite so attractive months later!). I think it was Liberon finishing oil but not certain

    Portable (bench-top) Workbench

Looks like a cool design. I made one pretty much off the pask makes video. Unfortunately I did only have hand tools for the build! Mine only has the vise on the front and I'm glad as I use the extensions a lot given how small it is! I have however rigged up a janky moxon style vise on occasion...

    Another Dutch Tool Chest

Thank you very much. I really have done very little, but have spend lots of lockdown reading and learning from YouTube so I've got the theory on lots of these things even if I'm unpracticed. Fair point on developing through mistakes... Learned all about making sure you're using the component...

    Another Dutch Tool Chest

I'm now the very happy owner of a Dutch tool chest that I've been working in for a few weeks here and there. I pretty much stuck to the standard design with a couple of changes: - It seems the norm in the states is to make them with 1*12 material which doesn't seem to be a thing here, so I...

    Grinder advice

@scubadoo that looks like exactly the sort of thing I was thinking! I thought the Veritas tool rests would only take a 25mm wide wheel, did you modify yours? Does it feel to you like there is much fire risk with the CBN wheels? Just thinking of the carpeted room I'm working from!

@JohnPW do you have a tormek or one of the copies? Wondering if the copies are any good

    Grinder advice

That used to be my plan, but I've got this record 405 multiplane now with 23 blades most of which need some love, and then various planes, so whilst it's not a bad option, I think in the long term I want the autonomy a grinder would bring

    Grinder advice

Context: - Don't own a grinder and need a way to re grind primary bevels. Getting a bit pressing as lots of my plane irons have massive secondary bevels now and a recent multiplane purchase has left me with lots of off-square randomly angled irons needing work which is painful even on my...

    Clifton 4 1/2 Smoother

I have a grey Clifton 5 1/2 and recently bought a green 7 from this forum. Love them both! I'd really like a 4 1/2 though so that I can leave the 5 1/2 set for a slightly rougher cut. I end up using the 5 1/2 both as a big smoother with a closed mouth and for a preliminary flattening after...

    Should I buy a Record 405 / Stanley 45?

I'm in need of a plane(s) to do grooves and rebates. I'm not too fussed about being able to do lots of mouldings as I'd rather pick up the odd woody for this purpose so I'm not interested in the more complex Stanley 55 for instance. If money were no object and they were in stock, it seems like...

    What's your Router Plane Style

I've recently bought a veritas. I'm sure its not a big deal, but the fact you can sharpen the 1/2" standard irons like a chisel by removing the foot sold it to me.

    Used saws and other tools

For my first saw i went with a cheap new Spear and Jackson one (~£25 for the 12" tenon saw) from amazon and a bahco xxslim file for ~£10. I then roughly followed this and some Paul Sellers saw sharpening videos to convert it to rip, give myself some nice easy-start teeth in the first couple of...

    Lie Nielsen Planes

Somebody posted this podcast on another thread which I found interesting: https://pca.st/82me6ron Basically they talk to Thomas LN about the shortages. No idea if the planes in question will be produced again, but listening to this is sounds like it won't be any time soon. They essentially say...
