    Brace and Bits

Thanks to you all for the replies. I have decided to leave the brace as it is. I've been cleaning up the bits and some makers' names have been revealed: Wm Ridgeway; W. Baker London; D Flather & Son. Two bits are stamped "Foreign" so are presumably cheap imports.

    Brace and Bits

I have cleaned this Stanley No.78 10" brace with white spirit and oiled it here and there. It is is in good functional condition but I am undecided about whether to go any further with refurbishment and I would be interested to see readers' opinions. I do intend to clean up and sharpen this...

Hello, and a couple of questions

As you are a woodworker and a dulcimer player have you considered making one? It is one of the easiest stringed instruments to make and involves no tricky joints and the sides are bent to very gentle curves. I made this one from offcuts.

    Replacement saw handle

Thanks, guys. Yes, an old hardpoint saw handle probably would have done the trick but I didn't think of that.... By "interesting" I just meant that I enjoyed the challenge but it took rather longer than I expected. I started with a fretsaw (scrollsaw), then used chisels, gouges, rasps, a...

    Replacement saw handle

My first attempt at saw handle making. This little mitre saw had a plastic handle that disintegrated. I made a replacement of ash - it was an interesting exercise.

    An unusual little hammer

Thanks to everyone for their contributions. The hammer has a few faint letter markings - one side seems to have: L TOOL - the legible letters on the other side are: C ILI It weighs about 6 oz. The "spike" is about 9/16" diameter at its thickest, tapering to about 1/4".

    An unusual little hammer

HA HA - I guess I asked for that one :) Any more ideas, anyone? (funny or serious)

    An unusual little hammer

Does anyone know what trade this hammer belongs to? It had a very crude short handle when I received it so I made a new one of ash.

    Which chisels to buy?

I am a fan of old cast steel chisels too. This one was given to me in a very rusty condition without a handle. It has a blade 7 1/2" long and is marked: Thos. Ibbotson. It takes and keeps a good edge.

Do you make your own instrument ??New project Electric cello

I had a look at the walnut - it looks like you have got the hang of bending OK. I haven't tried walnut but I broke several pieces of maple for a guitar and violin before I got it right. My cello (or rather my daughter's cello) has two pickups. The piezo-electric one has sensors under the feet...

Do you make your own instrument ??New project Electric cello

I hope you are getting on with your cello project OK. I made this one, which avoided the need to bend wood and it comes apart to fit in a narrow case.

    A Large Wooden Plane

Thanks for your replies, guys. I plan to use the big plane rather than selling it. The little plane is curved underneath and I use it for violin making.

    A Large Wooden Plane

This plane is 22" long and has no maker's mark. The iron is 2 1/2" wide is marked: Colquhoun & Cadman, C &C, Go Ahead, Cast Steel, Sheffield. I'd be interested to know how old the plane may be. The handle suits a rather small hand so I wonder if the maker was an apprentice. The screw that...

Unique log log slide rule ?

I have got a user manual for the Unique slide rule. I could post a copy but I suppose there might be a problem with copyright (Moderator please advise). It is marked price one shilling so it must be at least 40 years old. I have got several slide rules but I haven't used them much since I...
