POST 2014 SECRET SANTA GIFTS HERE

This year it seemed that I was "The little boy that Santa Claus forgot" :( . I was informed that my SS had not been in touch and that PMs were being ignored. On Christmas day as I looked at the posts showing photos of the splendid presents that others had received I sadly wondered what I might...

    Metric threads in wood

I agree - even tapping into end grain is possible. Dies are unlikely to work.

    basic carving set.... advice needed

In his Manual of Traditional Wood Carving, 1911, Paul Hasluck provides the following suggested list of hand tools essential to wood carving: No. 1 – Straight Chisel ½” wide, No. 3 – Straight Gouge 1/16” wide, No. 3 – Straight Gouge 1/8” wide, No. 3 – Straight Gouge 1/4” wide, No. 3 – Straight...

    Scrub plane project

Thanks Matt, that's an interesting point. Would any users of metal scrub planes (purpose built or converted No. 4s) like to comment?

    Scrub plane project

Thanks Jimi and Corneel. Corneel, I watched your video with great interest. This helps my education as scrub planes are new to me. I'm tempted to have a go at making a woodie scrub too, using the same blade size and general geometry as the infill one. Then it will be interesting to see how...

    Scrub plane project

Thanks for your replies gentlemen. Good agreement here - I propose to make it about 5 mm (or 3/16"). Here is a preliminary drawing. The blade would be 1 1/2" wide and 3/16" thick and made of O1 steel. A bit OTT to make an infill scrub plane? Possibly so but it will be a way of using a...

    Scrub plane project

For my next plane building effort I am considering making a scrub plane. I have chosen most of the measurements but one dimension that I am undecided about is the distance from the blade cutting edge to the front of the mouth, i.e. the width of the gap that the shavings will pass through. I...

    Drawback of thick irons

Tony, I think the thread may be 0 BA. If so, I could make a screw for you. What is the overall diameter of the screw and the number of turns per inch?

    Even more rusty tools

Yes Douglas, it's like a little Aladdin's cave of used tools. Most things are reasonably priced rather than really cheap. However, I go through the trays of rusty/tatty/broken/ incomplete things and look for things I can refurbish.

    Even more rusty tools

I went out last Saturday morning in search of old tools and paid £20 for the following collection: - Bevel edge chisel, 1”, Ward, cast steel, W&P crossed hammers and anvil brand, about 2” of blade left, ash handle (rather rough and damaged). - Paring chisel (not bevel edge), ½”, I. Sorby...

    Infill Mitre Plane Project

Thanks Jimi. Yes, I'm very pleased with Ian's work. I told him I plan to take the plane to Mac on Sunday but I don't know if he is going. I took the opportunity to have him engrave my smoother too and I'll bring that along, together with the Silchester plane and some others.

    Infill Mitre Plane Project

Thanks Jimi and Jamey. I have taken your advice and Ian of Chalco has done a fine job of the engraving.

what are the correct proportions for hammerhead tenons?

I found this in Woodwork Joints by C.H. Hayward: "..... the tongues prevent the wood from being forced outwards at the shoulders." I hasten to say I have no experience of such joints but I hope it may be of help/interest.

    Small Scraper Plane Project

To all: thanks for your kind comments. Andy: yes I plan to bring some planes to Mac on 30th Nov. - I might even bring the lead filled Frankenplane :) Rod: the post is connected to the sole by what would be called a through mortice and tenon joint in woodwork (there may be a metalworking term...

    Small Scraper Plane Project

Just completed, this little scraper plane is made of bright mild steel, brass and padauk. The blade is 1 1/2" wide, 1/8" thick, made of O1 steel and its angle is 110 degrees.

Plane Makers...something to float yer boat??

I think a dry run without the floats would be advisable to ensure the temperature is stable and doesn't fluctuate wildly due to controller instability :) PID controllers can be tricky to tune. The "D" function could be turned off on a loop like this and that would make it easier to get it...

    Work like a Roman?

Yes Jimi, well worth discussing, I think :) I like the look of the moulding plane but I've probably got too much on my plate to attempt to make one this month. I suppose it could be made of beech and the sole shaped using a scratch stock.

    Plane making attempt #4

Very impressive work, Tony. Please can you tell us the main dimensions and blade angle?
