Dear Sir, I wish to register a complaint about this plane!

To be read in the smallest room? :)

    a wood thread thread

 Yes, I do have have an idea for a music stool design. Here is a footnote. Readers of this thread may recall that I started off by making a 1" x 4 TPI prototype tap. It seemed a pity not to use it for anything so I set about trying to make external threads without using a conventional...

    a wood thread thread

Thanks Raf. I didn't see that programme but I imagine some sort of broaching tool was being used. Sadly, I don't have such equipment but my method, although rather slow, cuts a good square hole (even a blind one) and is cheap :) Thanks CC. No doubt further improvements could be made to the...

    Infill casting MkII

Yes, that thread of Richard T's is an excellent guide. However, I would recommend drilling and tapping the cap before shaping it.

    a wood thread thread

Here are photos of the final parts I made: the outfeed inserts for the threadboxes. I handed two of these plus one of the taps to Douglas. Now over to him to continue the story with descriptions of his adventures in making the threadboxes and their cutters :)

    a wood thread thread

Andy, yes, I milled the flutes – it wouldn’t have been easy with files. I have heard of keyways being chopped out with cold chisels but I haven’t tried this :) The square holes in the full size taps are sized to accept ½” square drive tooling. The photos below show how I made them. The...

    a wood thread thread

Thanks to all for your comments. Here are some shots of making and testing the full size taps. As you can see, I made them as a pair, back to back then I separated them before milling the flutes and cutting the square holes. Explanation of square hole making to follow in a separate post...

    a wood thread thread

Yes, it has been an interesting challenge and we have learned a lot about wooden threads and making them, together with discovering some new techniques such as cutting accurate square holes in metal. I agree that the threadbox is the tricky part, particularly the cutter shape, angle of...

No. 4 Plane Conversion to a Scraper

Thanks for the kind comments. At the moment I don't make things for sale but I have been known to do swaps occasionally :) . Maybe after I have retired, which may not be all that far away ..... The main part was made a little oversized then filed down to a good fit. I fitted it nicely to my...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Thanks. Yes, I made the mouthpiece too - I turned it as far as possible then used chisels, files, scrapers and abrasive paper. I haven't smoked for more than 25 years and I don't intend to start again either :) . I was given some applewood full of splits so only suitable for small articles...

No. 4 Plane Conversion to a Scraper

Thanks to all for your further comments. New scraper planes are extremely expensive and I saw this as a way of producing one very cheaply (with a bit of effort). I think that any Bailey type plane could be adapted in this way but I certainly don't recommend sacrificing a good one. However I...

    slot cutting in brass

Douglas, If you don't think that the number of slots to be made justifies obtaining new tooling you could make them by drilling holes of the right size at the ends of the intended slot, scribe between the holes to mark the edges of the slot, cut out the waste just inside the lines using a...

No. 4 Plane Conversion to a Scraper

Thanks for the kind comments, gents. Mike, Yes, the central bolt just holds the blade in place - it passes through the blade into the specially shaped nut. The blade is non-flexible, like in the LN scraper planes. Andy, If anyone wants to have a go I can provide details of how I made the...

No. 4 Plane Conversion to a Scraper

This is an experiment to make a scraper plane using a Stanley No. 4 as the basis. The blade is held against a metal support which is bolted to the frog mounting holes in the casting. I made the parts and temporarily fitted them to my No. 4 to satisfy myself that the idea would work. Then I...

Well done Jim. That's a clever idea.

Replacement Tote Screw for Stanley No.4

Thanks Pete, I'd love to know why they chose this particular thread.

Replacement Tote Screw for Stanley No.4

Where did you get them from, Pete? Was there a minimum order quantity?

Replacement Tote Screw for Stanley No.4

The thread is 7/32" x 20 TPI, which is an oddball size. If you can't find one I can make one for you. As it happens, I have just been making one for a Stanley No. 4 and my lathe is set up with the right change wheels and threading tool.

Can a user made metal plane body be deconstructed...?

It doesn't seem like a very promising case but please can you post some photos?
