    Sarre Plane

Thanks Douglas and John. Thanks again for the box, Douglas - a fine piece of wood and much more pleasant to work than bone would have been :)

    Car boot finds.

Well done. You have turned a very sad looking object back into a fine usable tool.

    Sarre Plane

Thanks Andy. Holding using one hand and a thumb works quite well but one hand only is also possible.

    Sarre Plane

I got the chance to sharpen the blade this morning and tried out the plane.

    Bronze casting infill plane WIP

Jim, If the lever cap screw is tightened hard it is necessary to slacken it a bit before an adjustment can be made. However, with the adjuster in place I think it is not necessary to have the screw as tight as if the adjuster is not there. Some experiments needed? :) This plane has a Bailey...

    Bronze casting infill plane WIP

Making an adjuster is fairly easy if you do it my way. There is no plate to screw to the infill, instead a brass tube is fixed in the infill and acts as a bearing for the adjuster to turn in. This arrangement has very little backlash and the adjuster may be removed instantly, if desired, to...

Comparison of tool prices over time.

Plated carbon steel has been used, as in this Stanley 4 1/2, which I believe is "war issue" (WW2).

    Sarre Plane

'Sorry Andy - I'm also eager to see how it performs but I have some other demands on my time now. I've never used Corian but I'd like to give it a try. It certainly looks good in Mad Bad Pete's planes.

    Sarre Plane

Yes, and handy too :) We had a thread about it a while ago: an-unusual-little-hammer-t66186.html Thanks Corneel. Maybe the Goodmanham plane should be next so as to complete the set of copies of planes found in England? http://www.handplane.com/906/the-ancien ... ire-wolds/ I'd have to find...

    Sarre Plane

Thanks Rodders, Bugbear, Andy, Corneel and Tony. Bugbear – thanks for the link. Lots of interesting stuff there. I especially like the “vice on a stick” idea and, since I have been given a smallish woodworking vice, I intend to give it a try. Andy – I haven’t seen the original plane yet but...

    Sarre Plane

Thanks Alan. That seems like an ideal spot to read about this subject :) Here is the next batch of photos, concerning some of the metalwork of the plane. The sole is made of 1/8” thick brass (I don’t know where bronze sheet can be obtained). The “turned up end bits” were made separately...

    Sarre Plane

No, I cut it from 1/8" thick gauge plate (O1 steel). The supplier's name is a happy coincidence :)

    Sarre Plane

Thank Paddy & Andy. I don't know where I could get a suitable piece of bone or antler. However, Douglas (condeesteso) has kindly given me a nice piece of boxwood. Here are the first few photos:

Thanks Toby, I began by making a scale drawing.

    Sarre Plane

Last year we had the Silchester Plane thread: silchester-plane-t81216.html This contained interesting discussions of various subjects including: tool making, metallurgy, history (e.g. Roman work benches) and also some humour. Quite a few people have liked trying out the plane that resulted. In...

    Slide rules who uses them?

I had a nice model 8 AVO complete with leather case but it was stolen in 1985. I always wanted to replace it but was put off by the cost. A couple of weeks ago while I was shopping for rusty tools I saw two AVOs for sale and managed to get the price down to £25 for the pair :) As for slide...

The Ad-Vice, a very special wooden vice

I too have a D vice and can testify to its excellence. I find the ability to raise the height very useful to avoid backache and to bring the work within range of my eyes without glasses :) Douglas takes great pains to develop his designs and rejects anything that doesn’t satisfy his exacting...

    Transitional: the smoother.

A real pleasure to see that :) Please can you tell us what glue and finish you used? Also please can you post a photo with the blade removed so that the frog attachment can be seen?

St James' Bay Tool Company infill plane kit

Well done indeed. I have enjoyed following this thread. You can definitely make one from scratch next time, complete with adjuster :)
