    William Marples Leather Washer Cutter

I bought this last weekend in rusty condition and minus blade. According to the 1938 William Marples catalogue it is a leather washer cutter. I have cleaned it up and made a blade. Now I just need to find a use for it :)

    Pre-machine age household tool kits.

My wife's maiden aunt died a couple of years ago at the age of 95. We found the following tools in the kitchen of auntie's flat: - handsaw, 20" - backsaw, 12" - claw hammer, 16 oz. - Warrington hammer, 4 oz. - small axe or hatchet, - Surform plane - chisels, 1/4" & 3/8" - pincers - water pump...

    C.H. Joyce Drill Press

Thanks for your replies. Turning the lever slackens the mounting of the pulley axle, allowing it to move up and down only. There is no sideways movement and no sign of a mounting place for a jockey wheel. OK - will do. It may take a while ..... 3 1/2" up/down.

    C.H. Joyce Drill Press

This drill has a brass plate marked: " C.H. Joyce, Engineers Tools, London S.E." - I thing that may be the name of the distributor rather than the manufacturer. I plan to buy new belts for it and get it working, driven by an electric motor, I am puzzled by the belt tensioning arrangement. It...

A Drill of Unknown Make, a Mystery Tool and Other Tools

Thanks for your replies. I may have to learn a new craft now :) I also wondered if that scraper had once been a file. If so, the grinding has been very neatly done. BTW, does anyone know why the screw of the gauge has a notch on it? I have seen such notches on other gauges but I have a...

A Drill of Unknown Make, a Mystery Tool and Other Tools

Bought today for £10: - Small double pinion drill. It looks a bit battered but works well after oiling. There is no visible maker's mark - does anyone know who it is made by? - A mystery tool, marked: Browns patent R9642379, Made in England. Does anyone know what this is for? I tried looking...

    A Non-Rectangular Stone

Thanks for all your replies. I suppose that customers these days would not accept irregular shaped stones even if QC departments allowed them out of factories :)

    UKW Secret Santa Photos 2016

Thanks Steve, I'm glad you like it. The steel is O1 (gauge plate) which can take a good edge and is capable of "backyard" heat treatment, unlike some other steel grades now used for plane irons.

    A Non-Rectangular Stone

This is a finishing stone of some kind, possibly slate. As you can see, an owner has fitted it to a piece of wood that can be held in a vice or clamped to the bench. I am intrigued by the shape - my guess is it is an offcut that has been pressed into service as a sharpening stone.

Yes, rafezetter, I own up to the spokeshave and the wood is indeed padauk. Big thanks to Morfa for stepping in and organising SS this year.

    UKW Secret Santa Photos 2016

I have received the following: - a book on wood threading, - a folding Stanley knife, - a 2” iron and cap iron, Bedford, Sheffield, cast steel, - some fine boards of East Sussex elm. Well chosen gifts indeed. Santa clearly knows that wooden threads and plane making are particular interests of...

Nicker for a moving fillister plane

I don't have a nicker but I might be able to make one for you. Please can you post some photos of the plane?

Yet another daft question :/ Plane floats.... I'm so sorry..

Please can you show us a photo of the plane in question? That might make it easier to recommend a suitable tool. Scrapers for metal can be made easily by grinding the teeth off the end on an old file.

    "Foreign" Tools

This brace and the set of bits have on thing in common: they are both stamped "Foreign" but have no other markings. The brace is not as well finished as say a Stanley but is quite satisfactory as a working tool. On the other hand the bits are utter rubbish - the points are not concentric with...

Miller's Falls breast drill - missing side handle

One threaded rod for you, Matt. I tried it for fit in my drill. I'll put the rod in the post if you send a PM with your current address

Has anyone ever made a violin, viola, cello etc?

I have made various instruments including three violins completed and two others under construction. It was lutherie that got me into tool making.

Miller's Falls breast drill - missing side handle

Yes, Millers Falls seem to have used US thread sizes that are now obsolete. I made a side handle for this Millers Falls No. 2100 and the thread is 3/8" OD x 20 TPI. I cut a suitable thread on the end of a steel rod then epoxy glued the rod into a wooden handle. If you can find out the thread...
