    AT1416VS

Congratulations on your new arrival, you will have hours of fun together. The 6" rest supplied is ideal when turning smaller items ant pens between centres and doing small boxes. For a longer one I bought this one http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-30 ... -m900-m950 but have now got the...

Axminster Trade Series AT1416VS or Jet JWL-1221VS Woodturnin

It depends if loosing the capacity of length or rotating headstock are an issue, neither of those have either rotation or the same length. The Jet uses a noisier DC brushed motor, the Axi uses a 3 phase induction with converter to give better torque at slower speeds. I had the 1416vs and...

    hobby lathe

Original post for bench mounting is https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/bench-mounting-an-axminster-at1628-or-at1416-t76081.html If you can't run to the chuck, stick with the lathe and get the chuck at a later date. There are many other ways of holding work meanwhile Phil

    hobby lathe

Steve Sk100 is a perfectly good chuck. I have 3 of the k100, a k114 clubman they sold off at the release of the sk series, and an evolution. With the new lathe I picked up the evolution bare chuck for £80 instead of £160, but with the 1416 I had the sk100 as a set with the c jaws, screw drive...

    hobby lathe

I had the 1416vs all of last year, I absolutely loved it. It was my first lathe and was used every week for several evening a week. It just purred along with its induction motor. The constant variable speed and reverse really is a luxury, but once you have it, you would never go to a belt change...

Local Post Office - Sorry to have to rant about them

From our local PO counter last month, where I buy first class large straps for my regular packages at 90p Me "eleven first class large please" Girl in PO "they are in books of four" Me "OK, I'll have eight then please" Girl "I haven't got any books of four, only loose ones, is that OK?" Me...

Another chance to buy a "Shed Of Distinction"

I like the way it states 45 minutes from Victoria Station, like you would be coming to collect by train! Def excess baggage on the tube I recon. Phil

    Fruit knife....

Superb tip on sleeping the tube of this or any other project where you may not have the correct bush. Been turning a little over a year and this method never occurred to me. Thanks Phil

May Woodturning Challenge - the Requirements

I'm learning things I didn't know I didn't know! Unconscious incompetence is the stage I'm at, at the moment, heading to conscious incompetence as I get better. Phil

    April Challenge - THE RESULTS

I'll take second to Dennisk anytime. A great selection of timbers, and a subject surprisingly difficult to get the right curves to look right. Great to see so many entries as well, well done to all. Thanks to mike for the efficiency of scoring and Richard for the Judging. Onwards and upwards...

April Challenge - PLEASE POST YOUR ENTRIES HERE

For my entry I thought I would tackle a material I have been avoiding since purchase, a Banksia nut. It certainly made for interesting turning, the mess was amazing. Good extraction and face protection is a must with these beasties. It lent itself to a decent sized egg, 75mm high by 55mm...
