    Bandsaw replacement

Update A round trip to Yandles and Axminster. Yandles, the record 14 inch and 16 inch. There was no difference n footprint between the pair, but a noticible difference in weight and build between the two, so decided whichever brand it was going to be the 16". They both looked decent solid...

    Bandsaw replacement

Thanks for the time for input AJB. It was the quoted power that put me off the 14 Jet, but we'll see. Choices, choices. This topic has bounced me from 14" to 16" to 14" and then to haven't a clue. It's going to be a hands on, get the feel of them, sort of decision, after a visit to both...

    Bandsaw replacement

I did consider the Jet 14" briefly as I do have a fair amount of Jet gear that I like, however, the 14" version is rated at 550w, which is half the power of the Record, and a two third of the Axminster , So I have dismissed the 14" Jet (rightly or wrongly) on that basis. Not entirely convinced...

    For my next question...chucks

That may well explain why all Axi machines this week have been reduced in price ahead of what everyone has come to expect, a rise of 10% I believe the once a year price rise is a flawed concept in today's fluctuating market and may lead to lost sales, rather that customers thinking of it as...

    Bandsaw replacement

Thanks again for more testimony to the satisfaction with the BS350 and BS400. This is going to be a hands in decision I think. In the workshop yesterday and I can't increase the footprint greatly over what the Delta 12" takes up so this will certainly be a factor. My recent purchase of the...

    Bandsaw replacement

I have looked around for a Startrite, but our local schools were re-kitted with Axminster and Jet kit a few years ago (probably to meet more stringent H&S rules), Fleabay ones seem to be 415v and expensive. I think I can find Hen's teeth easier than a decent local 240v used Startrite 351/2. To...

    Bandsaw replacement

Thanks for the replies. Alexm, I had seen the review of the bs350, and have just read the whole of Random orbital bob's excellent full review. Real food for thought. I have the jet 3520b and jdp17 drill, so I guess the 16" is more in keeping, size wise, though I really don't want to stretch to...

    Band saw replacement

Hi all I have posted as above in tool advice and reviews. bandsaw-replacement-t94100.html If anyone has any input it would be appreciated. I have linked so as not to run two separate threads, so please reply on the tool advice forum. Many thanks :ho2 Phil

    Bandsaw replacement

Hi All I am looking to replace my old Delta 12" band saw with a new 14" model. I use it for hobby use, blanks for wood turning, ripping branches up to 6-7" diameter, minor flat work, I prefer spinny stuff. Have narrowed the field down to two possible contenders, which I believe would fit the...

How to make a simple spinning wheel bobbin

Hi and welcome to the forum. The way I would approach it is to drill an oversize square blank held in a chuck on the late, or in a pillar drill, if you have one with sufficient travel. Pop it between centres and turn the centre around the hole, it then has to be central to the shaft. Turn...

    Does size matter?

Just to muddy the water, also consider the Axminster at1628vs with legs and extension. A package that will give you 16" standard swing, up to 30" swing with extension in lower position, rotating and sliding headstock, 42" plus length with extension if higher position. 2hp motor, soft switching...

    Cheaper Steb Centres Now?

Nor I, I bought th Sorby Steb 18 months ago and haven't used a prong drive since. I also have the 1 1/4 live and dead Sorby, but have just ordered the 1/2" live from chronic. Shame they don't do an mt2 1/2" so had to get the mt1 and a mt2 sleeve. Phil

Chuck selection with possible reverse rotation

Hi Graham There is a t38 (mine) and a T38R (not mine) The T38R has an extended body that allows for grub locking. I've not found any grub screws on mine but will look tonight. I've got the SK100's and a SK114, both have locking grubs at the headstock end allowing chuck and work to be removed...

Chuck selection with possible reverse rotation

I have four sk100 Axi chucks, all with locking grub screws, and an Evolution with no locking facility. When sanding, I do like to reverse sand as well and only use the SK100's. I did try (only once) with the Evolution, but it started to undo, at which point I stopped the lathe and it completely...

    Hi from Wolves

A warm welcome from Somerset as well. You'll find this a really friendly site, with a wealth of knowledge that is shared freely. Don't take the 1 in 100 badly, there are a lot of people who are 'voyeurs' I know, I was one for months before plucking up to join in. Phil

    What are they called ?

Ah, that was my plan as well. I had the AT1628 with the complete control box remote, so have decided to make the 3520's remote as good by doing your project, housing the complete control panel in a project box, adding magnets in the base. I have rubber trailer lighting cable which is quite...

    sphere turning jig

I purchased the easy pro jig last week (the exact one you linked). It arrived next day, perfect service Setting the jig to your lathe takes 10 minutes, and only needs doing once. As a first test I had a length of 4" fence post. I cut it to approx 7" long, put it between centres, and turned...

    What are they called ?

Hi Graham Are you boxing the original multi control from the headstock to make it a remote one with on/off, Rev/fwd and speed control instead of the straight on/off on the supplied remote one, or wiring a completely new one? Phil
